Pregnant and Itchy Allergy Skin

OK, so with each pregnancy my allergies have gotten worse. I didn't use to have ANY allergies, now just being up is a pain. I'm on my 3rd and final pregnancy (and really only have about a month left). I started out with just my legs being itchy, but it was controllable. Now, my arms and belly are itchy. I expect my belly being itchy is just the stretching, but everything else is just unbearable. I've even gotten hives (on my arms, parts of my legs, and now my tummy). I don't know what I am reacting to, maybe the heat, since it seems less irritating when cooled. I have started taking a homeopathic remedy (apis mellifica), which has helped a little (made the hives on my arms go away for the most part), but is there anything else I can do?
I've tried baths with Epsom Salts, and put vitamin E & aloe on. Even taking flax seed oil. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all the advise. There were a few things mentioned here that I will give a try.
As for laundry detergent, I already use natural stuff. As far as PUPPS, I don't think so. Partly because it started out on my legs and also, from reading the description my hives are different. No circle type hives, just rashy hives. All of my body washes are oatmeal based, and I try to stay as natural as I can with those too. I have taken Benadryl at night, and cooler showers help for a short while. I would blame the bunny, but it all started before we got our bunny. I guess with just 3-4 more weeks left I will try to just deal with it. But, I will be trying the baking soda bath (already been doing Epsom Salts) & will also try the olive oil (that might be nice anyhow). I you have any more suggestions, then keep them coming please.

Ugh, isn't the itching awful? I am 9 weeks into my second pregnancy. With my first, I itched like crazy and as of now I'm already itchy with this one too. With the first one I drenched myself in cocoa butter lotion. It started out on my arms only, then went on to my legs and belly. It got so bad, I was covered in bruises because of all the scratching I was doing. Hopefully this works for you! Let me know if you hear of anything else that works! :)

Have you tried taking a baking soda bath? I've used that before for itchy skin and it gave me significant relief. I would buy the "big bag" at CostCo if you can so you can put a higher concentration in the bath water than it says on the box.

C.,

I went through this my last month of pregnancy too! ARGH! It was horrible.

One thing I tried (Besides baking soda - great stuff!) was cooler showers and eliminating any lotions with Shea butter in them. Apparently women who have latex allergies can sometimes have sensitivity to shea.

Good news is - after the birth - it all went away! I hope yours will too!

I used to always use body butters when I was pregnant. They were great! Especially after my showers! Mary Kay's Extra Emollient Night Cream was wonderful as well.

It sounds like PUPPS Pruritic Urticarial Papules and Plaques of Pregnancy. I had this with my first pregnancy and I had to use cortizone cream to relieve the itching. You should talk to your dr. my OBGYN said it would only go away after you have the baby. But it did come back after I had the baby but not as bad and then it was gone.

Sounds like PUPPPS to me! I had it. It's technically an allergic reaction to your placenta. Ask your dr about it.

Hi C.,

I used to have itchy skin, too. It turned out to be my laundry detergent. I switched to a non-toxic "green" detergent (I use "EcoSense" from Melaleuca) and have been fine ever since.

It turns out that mainstream laundry detergent has toxic ingredients that we should not be putting next to our skin. I've had clients suffering from allergies, asthma and migraines switch to EcoSense and completely stop having their symptoms. Amazing...just from switching laundry detergent!

Best of luck to you! :)

Have you tried hydrocortisone cream or Eucerin lotion ? That's what we use for very itchy skin irritations.

Hi C.,

Congrats on your 3rd pregnancy :)
I hate to tell you this, but it sounds like PUPPS or PUPPPS. I had that with my 1st pregnancy. I got it around my 32nd week I think? I even had to go on Short Term Disability before my pregnancy because it was unbearable. Cool/warm showers helped about 5 times a day. The docs gave me a steroid that I only used if needed.
If it is PUPPPS it will most likely go away once you deliver the placenta. Its kinda like a allergic reaction your body is having to the placenta. That's how it was explained to me by my OBGYN. I would recommend going to the doctor to have them check you out. It was on my belly & thighs, but can be on your arms too.
Best of luck to you! If you have any more questions feel free to ask :)

It's probably nothing, but I would go to the dr.'s anyways just to be certain. I was itchy all over and ended up going to the doc, cause I couldn't take it anymore. Turns out I had scabbies (mites) that I got from our guiena pigs. They gave me a cream to rub all over my body once or twice, and then they were gone.

Hives! Oh yucky yucky. I am into natural care too, but you might want to consult with a regular doc or someone who specializes in allergies. Esp if this has worsened over time.
The topical stuff may provide comfort, but I would be more concerned (over the long-term) about how your body is handling some kind of stressor (causing the skin issues).
Maybe this will all blow over after the preg ends, but maybe you want to know more about what might be causing it, in case it does not. Newborns take up so much time...get ahead on the research now! Good luck.

I had rashes, but I'm not sure that they were the same as what you're experiencing. At night, before I went to sleep, I took Benadryl a few times. I'm pretty sure that this is okay with pregnancy. I thought that my doc said it was okay, but right now I can't totally remember (this all happened a little while ago). You may want to consider it because after about 3-4 days of taking Benadryl at night, my rashes went away.

First I would suggest that you look at the ingredients of the body products you use. Anything with parabens, mineral oil/petroleum, propylene glycol, synthetic colors and fragrances can irritate the skin and cause more problems than it is solving. The skin is the largest organ of both absorption and elimination. Everything you put on it, you are ingesting - introducing it into your body and that of your unborn child. There are a lot of natural alternatives. You could try rubbing olive oil on your skin. Also, "allergies" and hives are often caused by the body under stress emotionally as well as physically. Look at what you are eating - avoid processed foods, refined sugars, artificial sweeteners, dairy products and (of course) alcohol.
