If you have been pregnant with a toddler, did u ever at a certain point have a hard time putting the little one in the crib to sleep with a big belly? I've had a hard time even before i got pregnant cause i'm short, but man it's getting harder and harder to do it without straining too much or hurting myself. And i guess the biggest problem is that she's already sleeping when i put her in the crib (say what u want, yes, i still rock my 20 month old to sleep. oh well). I dont have a step stool to use and i think that's just kinda dangerous, so i was thinkin bout putting her in a toddler bed now. When is a good time? I figured if she's in a toddler bed i could at least lay there with her too to try to get her to sleep without rocking her as well. TIA mommas

So What Happened?

Thank you all for you help and advice! I just ordered her a toddler bed; i know, it's only good up to 50lbs but a twin bed would be too big for her room right now, especially since she will be sharing the room. Again, thank you ladies!!

At 20 months, I was also pregnant. That is when it was time to transition the older child into their new big kid/toddler bed. Better to transition now, than when baby is here and the child will likely feel competitive to give their crib over to the baby.

If you are dead set on getting her out of the crib, i would suggest going to a full twin bed instead of a toddler bed. Toddler beds are pretty much a waste of money since they only go up to about 50 pounds (and you won't fit on it with her). What worked for me was keeping my little guy in the crib and using a little kids step (the ones they make for kids in the bathroom) to get him in his bed. My kids are only 21 months apart. He was in his crib until he was about 30 months old and the baby slept with us in a pack 'n play in our room until she was about 9 months old. Now she sleeps in his old crib but he doesn't remember it as his bed at all. Good luck, and congratulations on your pregnancy!

I think its perfect time for a toddler bed, because it's easier on you, and you won't hurt yourself. I put my son in one around 19 months old because I am short and he was heavy. So it was super hard to get him in the crib. So good luck on the transition! And I rocked my son til he was well over 2! :)

20 months is an excellent time to move her, if you're going to put her in a toddler bed do it NOW, so she doesn't associate the move with the new baby, which could lead to resentment.

Be aware that most toddler beds are safe up to 50 pounds, (put one up recently and read the warnings on every model I looked at) so if you lay with her in the bed it could weaken the support. I've heard of moms who went to sit or lay on the beds with their child and they broke, quite a dangerous situation with you being pregnant. Of course, if you're using a twin size bed this wouldn't apply.

We've moved our kids into toddler beds as early as 18 months (the next kid needed it). It might be a good idea to make the move now if you are planning to reuse the crib with the baby so there is less "why is the baby sleeping in MY bed " issues.

Sounds like time for a toddler bed or other bed arrangement. I just transitioned my 20 month old to twin over full bunk bed (ladders disabled of course) and he is doing fine. Good for you for continuing to rock your little one. I also rock my youngest to sleep and did so with the older 2 until they were about 2 and asked to be put in their bed because it wasn't comfortable for them anymore. These days pass so quickly, but don't feel I missed anything--except of course, a LOT of sleep:) Best wishes on adding to your family soon. Midwife Mom of 3

I think she's probably old enough to transition out of the crib. We moved my son at 21 months and he went straight to a twin bed. He was so excited about being in a big bed and he picked out sheets with cars and trucks. We just got a rail to put on the side and we've never had a problem with him falling out or anything. That would eliminate your issue with being too heavy to lay with him. Also, as you get bigger you might not want to get down as far as the toddler bed or you won't be able to get back up!

I got my kids a toddler bed at 19-20 months. Seems like a great time to do it! If you are going to reuse the crib for the new one, it is easier if you take it down and put it back up... That way the elder child sees it leave.

I am also pregnant my daughter is 2 & I transitioned her to a toddler bed (she was climbing out of her crib) so I decided it was time but I wouldn't be able to lift her into her crib now anyway so that was a good decision...good luck!
