That's pretty standard. Unless there is something wrong or you were doing fertility treatments, they don't need to see you before that. Congrats!
So we just found out yesterday that we are expecting our first!! i called to make the appt and they said that they would not need to see me for 8-10 weeks and that I am just over 4 weeks along. Is that right??
I feel that I should be going in to "confirm" or something???
So, my hubby wants me to call a different dr. My normal GYNO retired this year so I guess we are just trying to find the right one. I have been taking pre natels for 3 months so I know I am good to go there, Thank you for all the advice
That's pretty standard. Unless there is something wrong or you were doing fertility treatments, they don't need to see you before that. Congrats!
My OB is the same way - they won't see us before 8-10 weeks unless there is bleeding or a serious concern.
That's perfectly normal. Many OB offices don't see you until your well into the first trimester unless they've been working with you on infertility issues or problems with miscarriage.
first of all, congratulations! A child is such a gift. : )
Because home pregnancy tests are very accurate, my dr.'s office didn't do a test for me either, however, they did get me in the following week. I'm not sure why they wouldn't want to see you sooner to get you started on pre-natal care. I guess the difference could be that I didn't know how far along we were since my DD was a surprise. Turned out I was a little over 6 weeks pregnant.
This happened to me on my first one. I was shocked but found out that it was typical. Turns out this is when they can actually measure the fetus and check the heartbeat, etc. It is hard to be patient but just hang in there, it comes soon enough and get them to call in some pre-natal vitamins for you.
Good luck and congrats!
P.S. I am on pregnancy #4 now and never have I had a blood test to confirm either. They just did an initial ultrasound.
My first set of docs wouldn't see you till 8 weeks. My second set did the blood tests and 1st U/S at 6.5. It depends on the practice. Congrats!
I have always first been seen between 6-8 weeks. 8-10 seems a little far to me.
It's up to you. All OB's are different. some do vaginal ultrasound to confirm early on, some do not. If yours doesn't, he/she won't be able to hear the baby's heartbeat with a doppler that early anyway. It's up to you...
I once miscarried at 12 weeks but was thinking I was pregnant the whole time (actually the baby stopped growing at 5 weeks but I only learned that later) because when I went in for my 7 week (my 1st) appt, he told me he wouldn't be able to hear the heartbeat since it was so early on. If I'd had a vaginal ultrasound we would have known that the baby was not growing right early on. It probably would have saved me a lot of heartache.
But that's just my story. I've had 5 other perfectly normal, uneventful pregnancies, so I just wanted to give you a realistic scenario of why you might want to go get an early ultrasound.
Sounds like it's time to go get "What To Expect when You Are Expecting"! Congrats!
Did you go in for a blood test then they wait 8 weeks? That sounds pretty normal to me.
Take GOOD care!
Yeah my obgyn was 8 weeks too! But in the mean-time I made an appt at my regular General Practioner and got my pregnancy confirmed there first! And they did a routine check-up..weight, blood-pressure, temp..etc.
Yes that's how it's done here. They generally don't give an appoinment with OBGYN until atleast 8 weeks because lot of pregnancies can get terminated in the early weeks. And there is nothing they can do to stop miscarriages if one has to occur , so they don't see anyone until later. This is the reason I was given. I did make an appointment with the nurse the next day itself as I was not feeling very well. She took all my information and advised M. on how to deal with my nausea and stuff but never did a pregnancy test. I was told that the home pregnancy tests are very accurate , so they don't do another pregnancy test at the clinic. Just like you , I wanted some confirmation too before sharing the news with family and friends :)
Congratulations on your first pregnancy!! It's an amazing feeling to know there is a life inside you - your very own baby.Enjoy your pregnancy!!! All the best to you!
Congratualtions! Yes that is correct. I found out I was pregnant on December 14th but unfortunately the pregnancy wasn't healthy and we lost our baby at 5 weeks. However when I called my OB they told me the same between 7-8 weeks actually and they confirm it and do a sonogram. Since this is your first pregnancy then you won't know of any "issues" but with me from now on if I get pregnant again I will have to remind them that I had an abnormal pregnancy last time and potentially an ectopic so they will most likely want me to come in sooner. Just be sure if you have any problems to call your doc asap......good luck and congratualtions momma! ;()) ain't it great to say it now!!!
Hi,
Each time I became pregnant, I was going through high-tech fertility treatment, so I went to the clinic almost every day around the time of conception. (I received blood tests as opposed to over-the-counter-pregnancy tests to determine RISE in HCG. The change in HCG over time tells you more about how the pregnancy is going (i.e., its viability) than one HCG reading alone. You can't get the HCG and thus the change in HCG from a home pregnancy test.)
However, for virtually everyone else, I hear that 8-10 weeks is normal. I'm guessing that the medical community just waits because it takes awhile to detect fetal heartbeat and we are not technically advanced enough to stop most early (first trimester) miscarriages, which are often the result of chromosomal problems. That being said, just sit back and enjoy your current state.
Best wishes,
Lynne
Well congrats! With my first pregnancy my OB's office did go ahead and have me come in and recheck and give me a run down of what to do and not do but with my second he didn't want me to come in until 8 weeks. I do think it's a bit weird since it's your first, but you'll be okay! Get a book and try to stay feeling good! I really liked Your Pregnancy Week by Week!
Congrats to you :))) yes that is very typical...I know how you feel wanting to get in right away, but that is standard. For one reason they really would not be able to see anything from a sonogram ( it's vaginal for the first one just as a warning!) I went at 7 weeks because I didn't know how far along I was and you can barely see anything. As long as you have a positive pregnancy test that should be enough...I took four the first time because I wanted to make sure and the Dr. told me one positive test is enough! Good luck and enjoy this exciting time in your life :)
After spending three years trying to get pregnant, I was surprised to find out that my doctor didn't want to see me until I was at least 8 weeks along. However that seems to be standard practice and all was well at my first visit. Congratulations!
they typically dont want to see you until around 6 -8 weeks. i'm not sure why. i love my gyno...i have been with him for over 15 yrs and he was fabulous during my preg and my c section. if you would like his name - email me and i will give you specifics about him and where he delivers. congrats!
Got a positive pregnancy test, then you are pregnant. Nothing more that can be done. Many women do not realize that the test the OB/Gyn clinic does is the same old test you take at the drug store. Many OTC brands are even better as the ones used in the office are a bit cheaper. Blood test are not done unless there is a need. To tell you the truth, blood test really only give us an exact HCG hormone level which only helps with girls going through inferrtility or chronic miscarriages. How many weeks you are dpends on when your last period was. Yes when most women discover they are pregnant, it usually dates them about 4 weeks. The truth is for dating purposes you get 2 extra weeks (so to speak) that aree counted in the cycle that you had not concieved. When you call in to your clinic, I am sure they asked your last menstral period and wheeled out your dates to give you a due date and how many weeks pregnant you are. Nothing a clinic can do before 8-10 weeks. When you go in the first time it really is just to get baseline labs, weight and an introduction of what to do/not do. For many women we do not even get a heart beat on the baby until the second visit. Actually we can not get one until 6 weeks gestation anyway on anyone, even with an Ultra sound. You will not get your Ultra Sound until you are 18-20 weeks anyway; if everything is normal. CONGRATULATIONS! You are OFFICIALLY A MAMA now.... Congrats!
Yay!!!! Big congrats to you and your family. I'm sure all dr's offices are different, but my dr asked me to come in to confirm with a blood test (even though he totally agrees that home tests are very accurate) and also to do an ultrasound to get a better idea of a due date. I don't remember if I did that with my first son or not, but my second was much more recent so I haven't forgotten that yet :)
Congrats again!
J.
Congratulations!
Just work, rest, eat and enjoy this time..
Is this your regular doctor? When did you have your last check up?
Are you in good health?
I did not even realize I was pregnant till I was almost 12 weeks with my first.
Get the "What to expect when you are expecting" Book and try to get your husband to read it too.. it will help a lot.. I actually gave a copy to my husband and highlighted stuff for him to read..
It will be a very special 2011 for you guys, enjoy your childless lives while you can. A child will rock your world.. in a good way..
That's normal. There's not much for them to do before then. Usually it's around 10-11 weeks before you can hear the heartbeat without US. You've had a positive pregnancy test so that means you're pregnant!!!!! Congrats!! I know how hard it is to wait for several weeks for your appt, but there's really no reason to go in earlier.
