Buy one of the pregnancy tests that says "pregnant" or "not pregnant"and wait until you're officially late. That's what I did with both my kids and there was no question...
Hello. My husband and I finally decided to start trying for our third. we are using the Shettles method to try for a boy. I took 2 pregnancy test a couple of days ago and they came back with a REALLY faint 2nd line. The next day I took another one b/c I am a paranoid freak like that and it was a different brand there was no second line on this one. I called my dr's office and they said I could come in and take one there and then when I am late they will do a blood test. Don't know if this has happened to anyone else or not. My husband tells me I just need to wait til the weekend b/c I am supposed to start this weekend and then if I don't start take one again. But, it is being patient that i am not good at. Please let me know if any of you have experienced this or not and what you did :).

You said you used two different brands. Brands can vary by how much hcg hormone they detect. It's very possible that the second test you took was not as sensitive.
It is so hard to be patient, especially when you really want the result to be positive :)
Here's my little story about pregnancy tests, and a faint positive:
I experienced this using "lab quality" test strips. It was an early miscarriage in my case. I had two days of a faint (almost couldn't see it without looking for it) line, then the third day, nothing. I was already a day late at that point. I called my dr. and she said it was probably a "chemical pregnancy" and that if I tested in 48 hours and still no line, that I should expect my period. I did get my period, and it was pretty heavy. A bummer, but we got through it, and eventually had our second baby.
I hope this isn't your case, and that you'll be sharing good news soon! Hang in there.
Hi J.,
I've had a faint line twice before, and both times I was pregnant - it was just very early on. (I can never wait to find out either.) Some tests are more sensitive than others in detecting the pregnancy hormone, so the 2nd one may not have been as sensitive.
Before you get too excited though, please remember that if you are pregnant, the very beginning stages of pregnancy (when most woman don't know that they are pregnant) is a very delicate, yet critical time for the pregnancy, so give it a few more weeks before getting too excited. (Which I know is nearly impossible.)
I wish you the best of luck with everything!! :o)
First, take a deep breath and relax.....
Second, don't set yourself up for major disappointment by trying for a boy, this baby will be what's it is. Love it dearly.
We've become a culture of instant gratification. Many want to know within hours if not a couple of days if they are pregnant following intercourse. If you're trying to get pregnant, hopefully you've been taking pre-natals or an iron supplement and have avoid alcohol and other potentially harmful behaviors, like smoking. Your dr's ofc is correct, wait until you've missed your period + a couple of days, at least, and then come see them for blood test.
Again your behavior shouldn't be any different once you get the 'official word' on your status than what it is now. And you don't want to be telling everyone that you are pregnant until you're late into your 2nd month, to make sure that it's a viable pregnancy. Your 9 months will seem like 9 years, especially to your little girls. I hope you have a very happy, healthy baby that completes your family. Enjoy each moment!!!
Hi J.,
OTC Pregnancy tests differ in what levels of hormone they can detect. So, that could explain why you are getting different results with different brands of tests. Your best is to wait until you are actually late and then retest. I know the wait is killer! (I hate that part, too.) But your body will make more hormone as you get further along (it actually doubles every two to three days) so try to be patient and just take care of yourself.
Good Luck,
S.
Hi J.!! How exciting. I'm with you. There was no way I could wait...I did learn with my pregnancies that tests are different. Some are more sensative than others. My doctor did tell me there are no false positives (like with your first test) but there can be false negatives (your second test). I bet it was just too early and if you took another test in a couple days in will be positive.
Good luck!! (& congrats!)
IF its driving you crazy and really want to know, I suggest trying the test that is supposed to read something like 5 days before period. I think its FIRST RESPOSE but not sure. Read the boxes they will say if they detect very early pregnancies.
I would just wait. Unless you have a medical reason that requires immediate treatment or change of treatment once you are pregnant, there is really no reason to find out earlier than your missed period.
I would actually wait until at least 2-4 weeks overdue on my period, because a. late periods are not uncommon, especially if you are older and b. there are a lot of early miscarriages during those first 4-8 weeks, usually having to do with an improperly formed embryo, and there is nothing that can be done about those (again, unless you have been diagnosed with a medical condition that can be treated)
Also, when I got the bills I saw that the doctor's office had charged me $30 for the same urine test I had gotten from the drugstore for $5.
Good luck and I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.
J.,
Don't know if you have tried leaving teh pregnancy test on the counter for half hour then going back to look? I went for a walk after seeing a FAINT line and wasn't really sure if I was imagining it. When I got back it was quite definitely darker!
I would wait. It may take a few more days for the HCG hormone to build up in your body if you are pregnant. It's possible to get a false negative on a test, but extremely rare to get a false positive.
Good Luck!
A.
