Hi, I was actually referred to this site by a friend and am posting a question on behalf of my fiancée. She is 12 weeks, and has already complained about her comfort when sleeping. I would like to purchase a couple of pillows for her, but wanted some feedback on what I should purchase.

I agree with the other moms: Snoogle is the BEST! I had trouble sleeping right from the beginning and this pillow saved my life - and probably my husband's, too. ;-) I also bought the organic cotton case and it made it so much more softer. Congrats and good luck!

I used a rectangular pillow that was one of those memory pillows. I think it was from Brookstone. I loved it!

Congrats!

I used two body pillows(one in front/one in back), but they do make large pillows that are in a horseshoe shape that work for both front/back.

I just used a body pillow that I got from Costco.

I had discomfort/pain while sleeping too, when I was pregnant with my 2 kids. For me, (and each woman is different), My Doctor suggested sleeping on my LEFT side. And this helps. And, I used the body pillow to wedge between my legs and sort of "hug" it while I slept on my side.

But ALSO, when you are pregnant, sleeping flat on your back is not comfortable. At least for me. So, I often times had to sleep in a comfy chair. While upright, this was more comfortable for me. (when lying down, the belly puts weight upon the internal organs etc. and makes it quite uncomfortable).

Try to have her experiment with sleeping positions... even if it means sleeping in a chair. For me as I said, this was often the most comfortable. And I had a good ottoman to put/rest my legs upon. Or, a lazy-boy recliner might be good too. (but I didn't have that).

Oh, a great book by the way is: "What To Expect The First Year", which you can find at any bookstore or online like at Amazon. Its great info. for a 1st baby and what to expect and about development.

All the best,
Susan

I used the Leachco Back 'N Belly - Contoured Body Pillow (from Amazon.com). Not only did it make sleeping more comfortable, but it helped me from laying flat on my back (which is a pregnancy no no) and it didn't cost as much as some of the other larger pillows. The down-side, is that unless you have a king-sized bed, you might have to sleep in different beds (which actually helped both of us get a better night's rest).

I also used the Boppy wedge and another double-wedged pillow. The former came in handy, but wasn't enough by itself, the latter was awkward and uncomfortable - and didn't keep me from turning onto my back during the night.

Dear W.;
First Congradualations!!!!!!:)
second. Feather pillows, can stuff and fold at least (2) and some memory foam that will be firm. (2) plus what you have should be great.
she'll most likey want these as you can alter the places and stuffs as she grows and softens near the end.
Soon she'll need something for her legs and lower back as well as belly and breast area, and dont forget the head. hahhahaaa.
Blessings and light

You are so sweet. There are a number of them out there. You can just get the plain, long (just looks like an extra large, long pillow. You want to take into consideration the size of your bed. There is another one out there that is a "U" shape that I really loved towards the end of my pregnancy. Best of luck to both of you!

I usually slept on my right side or my back with elevation under my knees... confirm with the doctor ... and didn't purchase any extra pillows.Giving her a gentle back rub is always nice ... ginger helps with morning sickness ... again check with the doctor ... enjoy this time together and talk, talk, talk about your feelings and expectations of bringing this child into the world together. It's going to be a first for all of you and all of you is all that matters.

Snoogle full body pillow! I also switched between this and the Boppy kidney shaped pillow (Boppy makes a bunch of different ones, so make sure it's the one shaped like a kidney and not the nursing pillows.).

I bought a J shape pillow from Babycenter.com. I don't remember the brand. It really helped. I would put the bottom of the J between my lets to get the pressure off my hips. Towards the end I used lots of regular down pillows around me as well since I had to switch from side to side often.

Congratulations on the baby! Hope this helps!

Hey W.,
I'd recommend the body pillows designed for pregnant women which can be purchased at Babies R' Us. The support the head and neck, support the growing belly, provide cushion between the legs, and some curl around to support the back to keep your spine straight. I purchased the Boppy maternity pillow and it has served me well my entire pregnancy.

Hi W., congratulations to you and your fiance. I got a snoozer pillow. It looks like a "J". I used it either under my head and hugged it or between my knees and hugged it. I was bigger in my 2nd pregnancy and would toss and turn frequently. Now that my baby will be 3 my son has claimed the "j" as his own. He LOVES it. Anytime I try and take it he always ask me, "where's my J?". Between you and your fiance, you'll find what works best. The snoozer and a really flat pillow to support my tummy during the last part of the 3rd trimester worked for me. Good luck.

Hi W.,

I was in a lot of pain too. Then I found pregnancy/nursing pillows at Bed, Bath, and Beyond that were shaped like kidney beans. They were perfect! She might want to try a few different ones to see what works best for her. What worked for me was a soft pillow between my knees and another pillow that was semi-soft for under my belly. That took the pressure off my back. Lumbar pillows worked for sitting at my desk.

Congratulations and good luck!

I found that a body pillow is cheaper than a "pregnancy" pillow. You can get at Bed Bath & Beyond or any other stores that sells pillows. I have two and couldn't live without them!

W.,

How thoughtful you are for looking to ease your fiance's discomfort. I had a heck of a time getting comfortable at night during the second and third trimesters. I was told that sleeping on my back (the only comfortable position) was bad for the baby so when I found a body pillow I was too ecstatic. It was a fairly inexpensive pillow (I got it at Anna's Linens) but it was long enough to cover me from chest to knee and gave me great comfort while lying on my side. You could probably spend a lot of money on a really nice down number but I found one made of simple polyester and squeezable was perfect.

Good luck!

Back N' Belly Contoured Body Pillow
I used this with my first pregnancy and plan to use it with my 2nd. It was great b/c when you get bigger your hips hurt from laying on one side to long so you toss and turn a lot. Turning with a pillow was difficult. This pillow is U-shaped so you sleep in the middle of it. So when you turn, you don't have to take the pillow with you. Total sleep saver.

I got one called the "Snoogle" from Babies R Us that I really liked. It had a spot for my head, behind my back or in front of my belly, and between my legs. It kept me really comfy throughout the pregnancy. Congrats on the baby!

I could not live (or sleep) without a giant body pillow and a set of wedges. The wedges (sold together) were 1" and 3" in height. I put the larger one under the small of my back (sleeping on my side) and the thinner one under my belly. I then wrapped my arms and legs around the giant body pillow to steady myself. NO, this is not fun for you, the man in the bed!! My husband was so glad when I gave these things up a few weeks after the baby was born.

What is happening is that your finance is losing her ability to "balance' when she sleeps because her core muscles are being pushed out of the way for the growing uterus. Using all of the stabilizers will allow her to relax at night. Unfortunately, even with all the help, the last 3 months are truly uncomfortable at night.

Congratulations on her pregnancy!
