for names, try behindthename.com. you can look up any name for a meaning, or they have links for different ideas... I have a friend who named her daughter Aamira, I thought it was pretty.
Im 13 weeks pregnant and the doctors still cant hear the heart beat. I know that baby is ok because an ultrasound showed a strong heart beat. But at the ob visits they cant here one. The doctor said it sometimes takes longer to hear it when you start pregnancy slightly over weight. Has anyone heard of this or had this same thing? Also any help with girl names . We cant come up with anything we agree on. We would like to stay away from the M names and have agreed on a boys name.
ITS! A BOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Im 5 months now and we have just found out that we are being blessed with a boy to go with our girls we have already. The doctors still have trouble hearing the heart beat but this is due to the position of the plasinta. But shockingly shometime they find it spot on fast, Thanks for all the responses and baby name help. We have desided to name are son Derek Anthony

I always wanted to name my other girl if we had one Trinity Nicole. Can't have anymore, hubbys fixed, lol. That is if its a girl. :)

wow you opening up pandora's box asking for girls names. these are mine
Isobel, Myah, Tess, Thea, (pronounced taaya), Caroline,Claudia,Gracie,
btw it is possible if you are over weight not to hear the babe's heart tones for a bit. Have doc press down harder
I was quite hefty when I got pregnant with my little girl. I believe we were finally able to hear her heartbeat at 15 weeks when I came in for my second appointment.
My little girls name is Rebecca and we call her Becca. I had really wanted the name Autumn but my husband didn't like it. You could stick with the M's and go with a name like Morgan or Melissa. Then you will have that connection with all your girls. :)
Other names I had really liked were: Emily, Emma, Evelyn (nickname Evie), Alexis (nickname Lexie), Isabella, Lilianne, and Camellia.
I had taken a baby book and went through every page made a list of girl's names three pages long. My husband and I then sat down on the couch and went through my list. We narrowed it down to 6 names. Then tried them each out over time to see which we liked best. We had a couple tests we used; yelling the name and seeing if we could make a tease out of the name. My husband turned out to be very good at coming up with a grade school type taunting for names. We wanted to have a name that would in whole roll off the toungue when you had to use the whole name. We als wanted a name that wouldn't be so easy to come up with a mean rhyme. Plus my husband wanted the name to be traditional that could have several nickname variations for her to choose from as she got older.
Hi S.,
I had a similar situation when I was pregnant. I started my pregnancy a little overweight, and my doctor couldn't HEAR the heartbeat until about 16 weeks, but they could SEE it at 8 weeks. I always relied on Ultrasounds. My daughter was born healthy (her name is Ashleigh) at 37 weeks.
Some great girl names: Kyleigh, Riley, Lauryn or Lauren, Lyndsey, Lydia, Bella, Abigail (Abby).
Good luck and Congratulations!
S.,
We named our two girls Chelsea Anne, and the other is Josilyn Ashley. We also liked Shelby at the time, but did not use it. Hope you find something you like.

My husband and I didn't name our son or daughter until 15min before we left the hospital to go home. It was hilarious. At 13 weeks you have plenty of time. I didn't start thinking of names until I was in my 7 month. Just listen for names while you do things. I used to watch the credits of movies. My son's name, Preston, I have always loved, and Ella, well just kind of stuck there. I wasn't crazy about it, but it just kept coming into my mind, so that's what we named my daughter. It was only later that I realized, everyone is named Ella, oh well, everyone was a Nicole when I was growing up. As far as the weight thing, it makes sense it would be harder to hear. The smaller the heartbeat the less likely you will hear it. It has to go through the placenta, uterus, our body etc. and if you have a little extra weight, that may be it. Once the baby gets bigger and the heartbeat stronger, you will hear it. Congratulations.
S., Does your dr think the baby is fine? Was this your first appt? From waht I have experienced if your beby shows proper growth for the week your in then the baby is growing. When I first time I got pregnant i went in for my first appt and found out there was no heart beat and the pregnancy stopped at 5 weeks and I should have been 9 weeks. The pregnancy ended there. Did your dr give you much hope or info? I would be asking a lot of questions. It sounds like your fine. Sometimes the position of the baby is hard to get acurate results. As for names. I have 2 boys but always had girls names picked out. I love the names Taylen, Avery, Kenna, Shaylen, Ava and Ashlynn. Maybe my boys will give me grandaughters one day.
Good luck to you.
SAHM/zombie 39 with a super funny 3yr son and a 6m son who doesn't like to sleep much. Im blessed to be home full time with my 2 beautiful boys.
My daughter's name is Elizabeth, too! We call her Lizzie, and it really suits her.
I don't think I heard a heartbeat until 15 or 16 weeks, either, so that's totally normal.
Good luck!
Hi S.,
I would have faith in your babies health and be thankful everyday for her.
I like the names Arianna, Erica, Alycia and Alisa.
Have a Happy and healthy New Year.
N. Marie
An option for a girl's name could be the month she is born, or the season.(Autumn is nice.)After a while I never told people the names I picked because they always tried to talk me out of them!
Take your Cod Liver Oil!!! (your best source of Vitamin A)
I wish you blessings!
Love Gail
If it was me and I was to have another girl...since you have named both of your girls with M's as the first name, I would name the third daughter with a M for the first name as well, you don't want to single her out from the first two. That's just me though.
As for the heart beat, I know that panic feeling that comes over you when you don't hear that wonderful fast beating. No worries though, you had a good ultrasound just remind yourself of that. Some appointments it would take my Dr. 5-10 min. to find my babies heartbeat. (scary)
Congrats on your new upcoming baby!!!
oh and good luck with the name choosing!
My sister did something that I thought was great. She has a daughter from a previous marriage and two kids from her present marriage. Her first daughter is named Erika. Then her next two kids are named Makaden and Maegan. She was surprised by her next pregnancy. Her husband wanted to continue with a "M" name but my sister was worried that Erika would feel excluded or something. I suggested that maybe she could choose two names that started with an E and M. She liked that idea but took it even farther. She choose the names Emily and Madison and then let Erika choose the order that they would go. Erika loved being able to do that and ended up choosing the name to be Madison Emily. That might be a fun idea for you to have your other daughters help to choose the name. As for me, here are some names I really like: Kimberlynn, Jade, Cassidy, Sophia, Evalynne, Camille, Addie. Good luck with everything! Congratulations!
You've had lots of replies but one more is probably reassuring - I am borderline overweight, but my OB always had a hard time finding the heartbeat. A couple of times she actually pulled in an old ultra sound machine to find it. This happened with both my kids (now almost 4 and 6). I had had a previous miscarriage, so we did an early ultrasound each time, which showed the heartbeats just fine.
Hello S.! I began my pregnancy slightly overweight and the nerve racking ob appointments happened to me too. I believe it wasn't until my 3rd appointment that they finally heard the heartbeat. Like you, I also had sonograms that detected a strong heartbeat and so I felt fine with it. 41 weeks later, I delivered a healthy baby girl! Don't worry, I think this is pretty common in the first weeks of pregnancy. Our daughter's name is Gwendolyn Emily by the way. I know, it's a mouth full! Best of Luck to you!
When I was pregnant with my daughter the Dr couldn't hear the heartbeat untill almost 15 weeks. She turned out healthy, in fact she turns 12 next month.
As far as girl names I like irish/scottish names like Leigh(pronounced Lee), Erin, Fae(or Faye), or even Ireland. I like babynames.com, give it a try.
I weighed 170 when i got pregnant so it took a little while to hear the heartbeat and when we did, the doctor always had ot search for it. Don't worry about it.
I am 15 1/2 weeks and saw my NP yesterday. She said that sometimes it takes until the 2nd trimester to hear the baby's heartbeat. I did not get to hear it at my 11 week ultrasound but we heard it yesterday. So that's at least one other medical opinion that might make you feel better?
Erika, Amelia, Lorelei, Hope, Grace, Victoria, Aushlee, Emily, Claire, Natalie, Julianna, Ursula..... These are powerful, confident women I know.
Dear S.,
I'm sure your baby is fine if they can pick up the heart rhythms on the ultrasound. My son was turned and flipped weird at first, so we had a heck of a time getting anything on the usual hand held thing at the OB's office. He's perfectly normal.
As for names....I guess it can be the hardest thing to come up with. My first baby was 4 days old before I named her. Everyone kept telling me they wouldn't let me leave the hospital without a name. I said, "Watch me."
Dad and I just couldn't agree on anything. It was a lost cause. His only suggestion was Athena. And no offense to anyone out there, I just couldn't go with that one.
I wanted to name her Rachel, which is my middle name. My grandfather had wanted that name for me so badly so I thought I would name her that. Dad said I was being too conceited by naming her after myself. One day, my dad called me and said, "Have you named that baby, Angel?"
That's what he always called me. So....I named her Angel Heather. I named her after me anyway, hee hee.
I see so many suggestions for Kylie, but I have to tell you, if I had a dollar for every Kylie I know, I'd be too busy on yacht somewhere to even respond to this. I know a bunch of them. And I do mean, a bunch!
Get some baby books. Imagine how the name will sound when it's announced at the high school graduation.
Imagine how it will sound if you need to get a little stern from time to time and throw the whole thing together.
I'm sure you will think of something that fits your new baby, even if you have to wait to see it first.
I always liked Shannon for a boy and some of the old shool names for girls like Georgia or Iris, Sally, Ruby or Pearl. Meredith isn't one you hear of too much.
The name will just come to you when it's supposed to. It really will. Don't worry too much about that part for right now....just stay healthy and the name will come!
Best wishes!
I know you want to stay away from m names but it might flow so nicely together if you had another. My 3 year old is named Malia which means calm and peacful. I've heard different variations like Malaya, Malania. Of course now our presidents daughter is a Malia it might become more common. I also really like Hannah. My 2 month old we just named Lynaea, and my oldest is Alaina. They kind of sound similar when you say all 3 girls together. If we would have had another boy we would have chosen Kevin or Landy which is a family name. Congratulations.
I don't think we heard the heartbeat through the doppler until my 16 week appt.at 12 weeks my doc had done the ultrasound first and saw the healthy strong heartbeat. Then she pointed out that the placenta was between the baby and my belly, so that would possibly make the heart beat unaudible. Which is was. I was glad my doc had told me that, and done the ultrasound before pulling out the doppler! The important thing is seeing the heartbeat on the screen. So you can be excited you have a healthy baby growing in there!
Hi Stacy,
I didn't have time to read all the replies, but wanted to let you know I had a check up at 17 weeks and they couldn't find the heartbeat without the ultrasound either. Dr said she would find it eventually if we wanted to take the time to really seek it out, but for the sake of time and too keep me from getting too worried, we went to the US. FOr me too, a strong heart beat was found and all worries put to rest.
I'm having the same issue with names; only our problem is that we just can't agree.
Best wishes.
I agree, asking for advice on names is opening up a can of worms! But in general, remember that trendy names can date you or nail your class/race/background--it may be nice now, but a little too revealing when the resume gets to HR. Who wasn't named Janet or Linda in the 50's (except me)? How many Jessicas and Ashleys were born in the 80's? What ethnic/class background comes to mind when you see the names Myesha or Shamika or Brandi or Tammy? In many cultures, the meaning of a name is very important. I would stick with standard basic names, Elizabeth, Anne, Lucy, Susannah, Celeste, that have good meanings. You can call an Elizabeth Lily for a nickname, etc. Don't give anyone a chance to discriminate against your child because of her name.
I have heard of what your doctor told you, but by the next visit they should probably be able to hear it. I would trust the ultrasound, because sometimes the machines in the doctor's offices aren't that great. My favorite girl names are Addison and Avery.
Congratuations I was also late in hearing the heartbeat, so don't worry about it. If I had had a daughter her name would have been Leah, after my great grandmother.
Good luck and enjoy your pregancy, take profile pictures every month to show how much the baby's growing.
I, too, had the same thing happen with my son. I was overweight, and my OB couldn't hear his heartbeat, so she decided to do an ultrasound in the office just to make sure. The heartbeat was strong, and we were able to hear it at our next appointment :) Keep the faith!
My ave is angela paige or paige angela, but there were too many paiges and angela's in our family, so that went by the side of the road! :)
We went with samantha joy for our first and our backup for our second was emily grace (turned out to be a boy, so we didn't need a girls name)..... but I'd recommend getting a name book from the library just to give you ideas. :) We actually came up with samantha from a fave tv character and grace the same way, then found things that went with them. Remember you can always call your child by their middle name if it works better.... ie... Steven Tucker we call him tucker.... tucker steven doesn't work well. :)
Good luck!
I have also heard of that happening. In fact, my OB always said he preferred to do an ultrasound because it's so much easier to find the heartbeat that way. Seeing it is perfect proof - don't worry!
Girl names... we just named our daughter Annabelle, but were originally going to go with Stella. Also love Harper, Erin and Eloise. I like Harlow, but a lot of people associate that with what's their names... Nicole Richie and her man.
Good luck with everything!
Names:
My Fav are: Ava, Rhianna (like the singer), Kylie and Ryan, but spelled girly like Rhiann. My sister is obsessed with boy names for girls like Dylan Rose or Jameson Rose, something to that affect, which is really cute when followed up with something feminine.
My husband and I found the boy names to be hardest and ended up going with the grandfathers for first and last. Our daughter's name is Avery, I fell in love with this name while searching and searching and still love it!
I have heard that before. In fact my doctor would not even do the dobler one right away. The could not find one on me during the ultrasound and had to do it up inside me to even see it. As long as the ultrasound is showing a good one, I would feel good.
As for names, we have two girls as well. Our daughters names are Katie and Kelly. :o)
I've heard of that happening, although I don't actually know anyone that it's happened to. Have they never been able to hear it?
As far as girl names. I love classics like Elizabeth (my daughters name) and Audry. My niece is Story, which is a cute name.
Best of luck!
C.
I am a OB/labor and delivery nurse and I can admit that when we have a mother come in that is overweight (and before 30 weeks), we sometimes have a hard time hearing the heartbeat and monitoring contractions. You are right. It is not that the heartbeat is not there, but that it is well covered and the ultrasound waves have a bit of a time going through all of the tissue and coming back as a sound (hence the ticking you translate as the hearbeat). Congratulations to you and your husband.
My daughter was born 23 years ago and I was way overweight almost 300 pounds and they did not have any problems hearing her heartbeat.
They just don't know were to look.
I would wait until you find out if you are going to have a boy or girl and then you can start from there.
I have a co-worker whose kids names begin with a "J". But you don't won't any of the kids to be felt left out if the other two kids names begins in M. I love Makena it is nice and very unsual unlike Megan which is a very common name. I was thinking since your name is S. you can call the girl Macie (sticking with the "M) theme. Marla, Miyah, Mia, McKenzie or even Mikayla. These are not so common female names.
Congratulations.
Olivia is a beautiful name and just rolls off a loving mother's tongue.
My personal favorites are:
Summer Nicole
Emily
Emma
Jena
Kayla
Kristin
Hi S.,
I don't have experience with not hearing a baby's heartbeat that early, but I have the experience on not agreeing on a girl's name. Here's what we did. We bought a baby name book. I took a pink highlighter and highlighted all the girl names I liked and could live with naming a girl. I did this away from my husband. There were several names in there I had not thought of previously. I gave the book to hubby. He took a green highlighter and highlighted the names he liked and crossed out the ones I highlighted that he didn't like. Any of mine that he liked, he put a star next to, meaning that was an option. He gave the book back to me. I reviewed his choices and crossed out the names I didn't like with my pink highlighter and added my stars. The result - Only three names that were liked by both of us - Samantha, Elizabeth and Emily. I liked things like Kayla, Morgan, etc. and he liked the classics like Christina, Sarah, etc. But we stuck to our plan and tossed all three of these names around with middle names and such and finally agreed. Anyway, our daughter's name is Samantha and if we had another we'd probably do one of the other two. And as it turns out, Samantha is a perfect name for her.
We didn't have this issue at all for the boy name and when our second was born (a boy) he got the boy name we already agreed upon.
It really was kind of fun to do the whole baby name thing like that. Good luck.
Hi S. & Congrats!!!
I picked names from favorite childhood stories. I wanted my first daughter to be named Laura because I loved the "Little House" books but my son's name was Luke (after Luke Skywalker, my first "crush" and of course after the apostle Luke "the bringer of light") but I thought having a Luke and Laura was too weird...those of you who watched General Hospital growing up know what I mean...
So I named my first girl Alicia, a variation of Alice, which means "noble and true" because I also loved Alice in Wonderland (and with my husband's last name, Alice did NOT work.)
By the time I had #3, a second daughter, I had picked Olivia because I thought it was just so pretty... Unfortunately, that name is REALLY in vogue and there are MANY Olivias out there!
So I guess my advice is to look for inspiration in what you love and admire...for me it was literature and film. And try to stay away from those "trendy" names :)
Hi S.,
Congratulations!!!!!
Names are very personal, not everyone will agree on what a good name is but I will give you my fav's.....
I had wanted to name a girl "Bella" (it means beautiful in Italian) my husband did not agree. We ended up with three names....again couldn't decide but in the end it suits our daughter perfectly!!!!
Her name is Cherish April Marie.....her first name says it all!! She is very loved!!
Hope this helps....Good Luck & again Congrats
Congratulations. We have 5 girls here are their names.
Kiley
August
Haley
Julia
Emily
S.,
My OBGYN has always reminded me that only 50% of women can hear thier babies heart beat at 12 weeks, some women (me included) can't hear their babies heart beats with a moniter until they are closer to 16 weeks.. But since baby showed up with a strong heartbeat on the ultrasound I am sure it will show up at your next appointment!!
As for Girl names we chose to use "boy" names,
our daughters are named Danni Rose, and Tyler Rose.. We gave the girls my middle name and we gave our boys my husbands middle name... Good luck on your name search!!!

Take care,

Hello S.,
Had a friend who had a similar experience. But as you she was able to see the baby heartbeating during the Ultrasound. Don't worry, Around a few weeks from now you'll be feeling the little movements (like butterflies in your tummy). As for a name how about Sophia!
Well good luck!
I have four sons........the names I tossed around for a girl (wishful thinking) were, Georgia, Olivia, Elizabeth.
Cutesy names are good on babies and little girls, but not so great on grown women. Good luck with the naming and congratulations!
Hi S., if the ultrasound showed a strong heartbeat, I wouldn't worry. I had a similar thing happen when I was pregnant nearly three years ago and I'm overweight. First off, usually the machines in the OB office aren't as high-tech and, at least in mine, a bit outdated. And, like others have said on here, basically there's an extra bit of padding between the uterus and the outside of the body so I'm sure your little one is just fine, heartbeat and all! :) Congrats.
I have heard this from a few people. Their doctors told them the same thing. One friend of mine could not hear the heartbeat with the handheld doppler until she was almost 18 weeks. As long as everything is OK with the ultrasound I wouldn't worry.
How about the name Sadie or Delaney for girls names.

Thousands of baby girl names and meanings.
This time around we were in the same boat. The first time I knew my daughters name without hesitation. This time we don't know what we are having and struggled to pick a girl name we both liked.
As for the heart beat issue, be thankful for the ultrasound! You know that little heart is beating strong because you saw it! With both my pregnancies it took several weeks longer than typical to hear the heart with the doppler. I have a retrograde uterus that faces my spine rather than out towards the bellybutton like the other 90% of women. My dr. told me until the baby grew and grew forward it would be hard to hear. I would imagine that even if your don't have a retrograde uterus, if the baby implanted on the back of your uterus it could be simply too far away to hear at this size.
Have no fear, your baby is growing silently and fine! Pretty soon you'll have the joy...and pain...and discomfort of a baby kicking all of your insides like crazy and will have no doubt that her little heart is beating away strongly!!
My daughter is Bella, which I love of coarse. I also like Emily, Emma, Ella, Stella.. Get a baby name book if you can. You may find one at Once Upon a Child even. We found our daughters name in one night. Got as far as the B's and were done!
I was not overweight, but the doctor still had to rely on the ultrasound around 13 weeks with my second pregnancy. The doctor said that was common.
Try BabyCenter.com to look up names and name origins, as well as track your pregnancy.
As for girls names. My daughter is Angelina Marie (her father picked the first name and I picked the middle name.) If we had a second girl, I was thinking of names like Kylene, Sophia, or Chloe. (I was going to pick the first name with the second girl.)
Instead we had a healthy baby boy and didn't name him Travis Edward until an hour or two after he was born. He is six months old now and we are finally getting used to his name.
You will get to hear your baby's heart beat soon. It took me a little longer to hear my child's, and they suspected the fat. If you have an ultrasound showing a good heart beat, rest assured.
I had a boy...some of the girl names we liked:
Megan was a name we were considering, I see you have a daughter by that name...good name!
Arwen (I know someone who has this as a middle name)
Ayla
Karina
Kiana (if I have a girl ever, I may still use this)
Shoshana
However, a name is a special label, and there are many, many websites with names and meanings. I recommend searching through them to find one that resonates for both of you.
Best of luck!
Lauren, Lily, Ann, Grace, Shauna, Jennifer, Kimberly, Victoria, Kathryn, Lynn, Lisa, Cindy (or Cynthia), Jordan, Jessica...just a few to ponder. Congratulations. Let us know what you decide!
