Pregnancy Question... - Chicago,IL

I posted a question about a month ago now that I was a week late and that the home PT were negative. I went to my doctor's office a day after my missed period and he refused to give me a blood test because he said home PT's are just as accurate as a blood test, so I am not pregnant. Here I am a month later, no period and the tests are still reading negative. I am so stressed over this because it's one thing to get your period and know that obviosly you are not pregnant. But to be a month late and still receive negative results...it's soo frustrating. I am driving my husband nuts over this (understandably) because I take a test once a week thinking maybe I tested to soon, as the doctor said I may have done, and get a little depressed because it isn't the result I was hoping for. In the past my cycles were irregular, but after my daughter was born almost 3 years ago they were on time. So it's upsetting to me that when I was a week late I thought for sure it happened. And now here I am a month late and still negative results. As far as any symptoms I had some cramping 3 weeks ago and I started to again on Sunday. I've also made more trips than usual to the bathroom the last couple of days and my breasts are tender, but that's it.
The doctor said to see him again if I am a month late; but what will he do? Take another urine test and if it reads negative tell me to come back in a month?
I'm just hoping that maybe other mom's out there went through something like this in the past and can give me some advice or words of encouragement. I have not talked to anyone about this, and I can't with my husband because I'm driving him crazy over this as well. Thank you all in advance!

So What Happened?

Thank you ladies so much for your advice and kind words. I went to my appointment with another doctor at the same clinic 2 weeks ago and he also refused to give me a blood test stating that the urine test are just as accurate as a blood test. He told me I am not pregnant and must be stressed. He told me to come again in another month if my period still has not come. Needless to say I was very upset leaving that clinic and decided to find another doctor at another clinic. The symptoms that I had 2 weeks ago, sore breasts, some cramping, and going to the bathroom A LOT, continued so I decided to take a test yesterday and it came back positive! I took 3 test to be sure, (2 last night and one this morning) and all positive. My husband and I are so happy and excited! I have my appointment with the new doctor in 2 weeks, so I whould find out exactly how far along I am. Thank you again to all that responded!

Before I was pregnant with my daughter, I would miss periods, and would have other similar pregnancy symptoms- but all PT were negative. I even went for about two months with no period. My doctor finally did an ultrasound which showed ovarian cysts on one ovary, and a cyst in the fallopian tube. It's possible you have something similar. If you feel something is wrong, then get a second opinion and ask for a pregnancy test. It's not uncommon to miss periods from time to time, but I would get concerned if it went too long.

It sounds like your stress is delaying your period. In all honesty the home preggie tests are very accurate once you miss your period. I know that sometimes they can be wrong...every woman is different but by now if you were pregnant the stick test would have worked. You are testing first urine in the morning? Go see your doctor and do a blood test just to put your fears to rest. Also, I am very regular and was back on track right after my son was born 11 months ago...then after a few months became irregular and missed a cycle for three months and nope not preggie....Try to relax get confirmation from your doc and then have fun trying again....Tis the season for excitement. Best of luck.

Taking into account that before you had your precious baby you where irregular chances are that your hormones are out of whack. Some many times we have systoms we (upset stomach for example - could mean the flu, ate something we shouldn't, pregnant, etc.) I think your Dr. was neglect and I would be finding another one.

Wishing all the best.
Merry Christmas!

Hello
I think you definitely need to change your doctor. According to my doctor the blood test is very accurate and if you are not getting your period he should investigate what is going on, instead of asking you to come back next month. I believe if you are not satisfied now with your doctor, what is going to happen during your nine months of pregnancy? Doctors are there to support you, not to make you feel confused.
Definitely check yourself, listen to yourself and ask for assistance.
Good luck!

Get a new Dr! Home tests are not accurate as any educated person knows! This dr is an idiot; not someone who should be working in this field! I work with obs, midwives, and of course clients prenatally. I can give you a great referral based on your location! But bottom line, get out of there. This is a business, fire this idiot. You and the insurance company are paying this person big bucks to do as you ask!!!!

My response...A NEW DOCTOR. A blood test is more accurate and can let you know if you are pregnant before it shows in urine. Also, he should be helping you put your mind at ease. Go back for now so that he can test you but be on the look out for a doctor who is helpful to you and your medical needs.

First of all, if it's an option, change doctors. Ask to have an ultrasound. I had crazy pregnancy symptom when I had ovarian cysts. I am not sure why, but hormones get all out of whack and mimic pregnancy. My period was never a month late, but every single day it didn't come I was sure I was pregnant (I wasn't). You may also want to ask for a full thyroid panel. There are so many reasons cycles can go off course - you need to find a doctor who will take more time to discuss this with you. Good luck - hope you find some answers soon.

ok a couple things the 1st sample is the most consentrated HCG content however after a month it should be high enough for any test to see.

2. I have a couple of friends that it takes 2 weeks after a missed period to show a possitive

3. I tried to conceive my 1st born for 6 months wow, I was late, YAY right, well I took test after test after test negitave 30 days later still negative, so I went in and the doctor put me on a medication to bring on my period. I stressed and wanted so badly I stopped my period, and made ever symptom come on Morning sick, yup, etc. well after the meds I got my period and the very next month I was pregnant.

I am sorry this is very frustrating, but it happens. Call your doctor get checked out, and have him get to the bottom of this, good luck

Stress can take a huge toll on your body and cause to miss periods. When we were trying for my 1st I had many months where I missed mine because of the stress I was putting on myself. Eventually after 2 years I did get pregnant but I had to really not let the missed period thing freak me out cause it only caused it to be that much later. With my 2nd pregnancy i was almost 2 months late before the test cam e back positive (I have very irregular periods so its hard to calcualte sometimes). All I can say is try not to stress out and take it on month at a time (I know its easier said then done). Also after a month being late ask your Dr for a blood test since they can detrmine pregnancy earlier. Hope this helps ((HUGS))

What brand of test are you using? With my last, I kept getting the cheap tests from the dollar store (like 10 of them! LOL!). I knew I was prego because I was late and had the breast tenderness too, but the test kept saying negative. So I went to walmart and got one of those expensive tests that says something like "gets results up to x days faster." It came back positive. Depending on where you are, you can always go to planned parenthood and get a test there, if your doctor wont give you one, or if you have a birthright in your area, they do free testing also.

If your doctor is refusing a blood test, go to another one. If the bloodtest comes back negative, tell him that something is wrong, and you want him to find out what. Be your own advocate and get to the bottom of it.

I tested positive on home pregnancy tests, and my doctor insisted that I had him take a test any way. Of course, it was postive. My doctor told me that the blood test are more accurate. So I am surprised that your doctor didn't insist take a blood test. I would just go back in a month if your period doesn't come.

I couldn't agree more with GET A NEW DOCTOR. Home test are NOT as accurate as blood tests and I don't know how he could say that. Your situation sounds very similar to a friend of mine's but her doc did give her a blood test (which was only about 20 hcg) followed by an ultrasound (they said was "empty sac")...however she was pregnant and had a healthy baby nine months after her last period. Luckily she didn't go through with d&c as her doc had suggested.
That being said, many many women just skip periods for no "apparent reason" and this could be the case with you as well...
Your doctor should be willing to do whatever it takes to 100% confirm you are not pregnant. Obviously he has NO IDEA what it feels like to not know and be on pins and needles every second...every twitch in your body makes you question what is going on...
It really upsets me to hear when doctor's treat their patients with complete disregard for their feeling and mental well being!?!!
I hope your prayers will be answered.

You definitely need to see a dr & have an exam. Same thing happened to me & i was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). I dont want to worry you, but you have to be proactive. There are other reasons a period does not show up besides being pregant. Have you gained weight? Are you stressed? Have you lost weight? Tell your dr you want a complete exam, and if he does not comply, see someone else. Good Luck!

The doc is telling you to come back at the point that you are a month late so that he can most likely test your hormone levels. If you were pregnant, it would have shown up on a HPT by now.

I have a friend that couldn't get pregnant until her hormone levels were tested and it was discovered that she needed medication to kick start her cycle, so to speak. She just had baby #2 about a month ago.

Well, I'm going to go against what most others have said...I had similar things with my now 7yr old. And, unfortunatley, my symptoms continued for quite a while! I was actually 3mos along when I finally had a postive home pregnancy test! Well, I was actually getting my period that whole time, but I had the cramping, frequent bathroom trips, sore breasts, etc. I thought it was just a change with my body because of the negative tests. But, to much of my surprise, I ended up with a positive test, went to the dr., had an ultrasound, and he was measuring at about 16 weeks along!
So, go with your instinct...If he won't do a blood test, and that's what you want, find a different doctor who will listen to YOU!
Good luck with everything!!

That happened to me also when we were trying for our second child. I was always very regular and suddenly was late but all the tests were reading negative. When I went to my doctor, he also just gave me a urine test that also read negative. For some odd reason, my cycle was just thrown off, don't know why. I was given medication to start up my cycle again and everything was fine. You will also probably get just a urine test and may possibly also get the medication (don't remember what it was) and your period will start again and get back on track. I think I had to wait a couple of cycles before I could start trying to get pregant again though. Hope this helps!
