Curious if anyone has had a teanus shot while pregnant? Everything I read says dont have one. I stepped on a clean new nail ( wasnt dirty or rusty) and I am 6 weeks pregnant and due for a tetanus. I am calling my OB in the morning but I thought I would get some of your feedback first!
Thanks

What can I do next?

I did have one in November 07 when I was 8 months pregnant. Baby was born December 31. My OB did approve it. So far, all is well, but it's only been 5 months. :) From my understanding though, if tetanus comes on, it will come on quickly. You may already be past the point of danger (and if you are...I would just skip it, just in case). If there is still a danger, I would probably go ahead and get it personally, you don't want something like that to endanger you child either. Sorry this wasn't more helpful.

Hi M.,

I stepped on a rusty tack strip for carpeting when I was pregnant and I researched online about it. Tetanus comes from dirt or that's where it thrives, not on clean nails. I was fine, didn't get the shot or tetanus. I can't remember too much about what I read since it's been a while now, but since the nail was clean, don't worry about it. Of course, check with the OB like you plan, but just to ease your mind, you're probably fine without it! Good luck & I hope your foot feels better!

I would not have the shot. Getting tetanus is very difficult, it requires a combination of rusty metal and manure - a clean nail is just a puncture wound and I would not have the shot. However, I think that there is very little need for these shots overall if you live in pretty much any city in the U.S.

I had a tetanus shot when I was 4 weeks pregnant. I was due for one, and I thought I'd get it done before getting pregnant. I thought the possibility of already being pregnant was there, so I asked and my doctor said it would not matter because it would not harm the baby. I now have a healthy, happy boy!
