Has anyone ever had melasma on their face, after/during pregnancy? After having my second daughter (8 1/2mo), the hyperpigmentation is horrible. I've tried lightening serums and I use sunblock all the time, but the darkness is not fading. Do you know of any product that will work to get rid of it? I just recently heard of a product called Obagi System, has anyone had success with that? I've been told by a dermatologist that the only thing that MAY work is laser surgery. I don't want to go through such a procedure especially if I'm not assured that it will be gone. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much

Hi K.,
Yes I have heard of Malasma. I am a skin care consultant with Arbonne Int. Pure swiss Skin Care , Aromatherapy, Wellness & Weight Loss Products. Several months ago a woman came to me asking me for advice about her teen daughter. I investigated the skin condition through my company. Your Doctor is probably right as this condition is not easy to treat. You are doing the right thing by using a sunblock, that is a must. What my Arbonne advisor told me was to recommend one of our products called "Intelligence Rejuvenating Cream" Key Ingredients are Blue Copper, cucumber extract, antioxident vitamins A,C & E. We recommend this product to people with skin discolorations like age spots. In fact I use it myself for that reason and it works for me. This is probably going to be an ongoing problem for you so I suggest you use a daily regiment of Level 5 skin care and no less than level 5 not over the counter products. I've never heard of Obagi but please beware of products that are too harsh. If I can help you in any way with my Arbonne Products please email me as I don't know if I'm allowed to advertise my website in this response. ____@____.com
Good luck, J.

hi,
I use kinerase products usually but I was open to try something new...so i went on line and tried the obagi nu derm products. i spoke with an ethestician on the website and mentioned that when i break out it sometimes leaves a mark and i have a few extemely light freckles i wanted to bleach ...or lighten up. the women recommended the obagi and so i spent close to 500.00 on the starter kit. it kinda burnt my skin all on my chin..it was raw and then calloused for awhile. my opinion was it was very strong and i didnt see the results because i wasnt able to finish the regimen...but good luck...i think there products are for older...not twenty year olds....but who knows

I had it on various parts of my body but with time it faded. I would get a few professional opinions before I make a final choice. Good Luck!

I have been dealing with melasma for a few years now. I originally was told the only way to get rid of it was laser but after the first treatment it went away only to come back with a vengeance. Now, I have been reading how researchers found that lasers are the opposite of what one should do with melasma. I have used Obagi in the past and it worked well for a while but then stopped. Im not sure if my skin grew accustomed to it or what. I've done a very extensive mask called cosmelan. It worked wonderfully and with the sunblock that I use religiously, it lasted for quite a while... nothing 100% mind you but a good 85-90%. I am STILL looking for the perfect cure though so let me know if you've struck gold.

I am a licensed Aesthetician. I also taught the subject and specialize in medical Aesthetics. Obaji is a GIMIC. It does work but not because your face turns blue. I have performed & received multiple cosmetic procedures. The premise behind what he is selling you is the products & then TCA. In order to do "the program" you will endure weeks of redness & peeling before the procedure.

I am not an MD & cannot prescribe so what I am about to state is a personal opinion & is not intended to replace the advice of a licensed Dr.

Now I have finished my legal disclaimer and can cut past all the fluff. I would recommend you get an RX for Retin A & Hydroquinone 4%. YOU MUST USE SUNBLOCK RELIGOUSLY OR YOU WILL DAMAGE YOUR SKIN & INCREASE YOUR CHANCE OF SKIN CANCER! I cannot stress that enough. In the morning put the hydroquinone on your entire face prior to sunblock.

This is important, your doctor will tell you to use Retin A daily or in the case of Obagi twice a day. Sunlight will deactivate the actual benefit from it anyway. Start our using it 2 times a week at night after you put hydroquinone on your entire face. What ever other products you use Retin A must be last. Do not rub in on hard, gently place it on your face. Do not use on your neck. As a side note it can be used on stretch marks that are still red. After a couple of weeks add a third night and gradually increase your nights of usage. Do not use hydroquinone for more then 6 months or you will risk hypopigmentation which cannot be fixed.

This process will stop the tyrosine from forming new melanin. Since your Dr. recommended this process I am assuming your skin color is fairly light. The darker you are the more caution you must use. The next process is a TCA peel. I reccomend against the Obagi because it leaves your face blue. You are better off finding someone with the experience & skill to use liquid TCA.

Please feel free to contact me back with any questions. My plastic surgeon is Dr. John Farella in Mt. Kisco, NY & he is the best I've ever seen. Since I am in this industry I've seen a lot of things that haven't gone so well.

Good luck.
Kim
