Pregnancy Hormone Levels

I had a chemical pregnancy last month at 4 weeks. Because of it my Dr told me the next positive home pregnancy test I get to come in for a blood test. I got a positive test Monday and had blood drawn on Tue. The nurse just called me my test was positive and that they want me to have blood drawn again on Friday to make sure the hormone levels are rising.

My HcG level was 28 which she said was low but it's probably because I just turned 4 weeks from LMP that day. They are estimating 1-2 weeks from ovulation.

Do any of you know anything about this? I need all the info I can get my hands on. Does that sound about right? I am so worried that I am going to miscarry again. I am driving myself insane.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, I still don't know too much. Like I said my HCG levels at 4w0d was 28 and then at 4w3d it was 79. At 5w3d they were 1219. The nurse said my numbers were increasing like they should be but at this point are considered to still be low. I wish I had never had my numbers checked. All it is doing is causing me to worry. However, they did discover that I have low progesterone and started me on 200mg of Prometrium daily. Had a sono done at 7 weeks at saw a tiny beating heart. Going for another sono at 9 weeks! YAY! My 9 weeks sono was bad. No heart activity. So I had a D&C and gave my baby to God.

My levels on my first blood test with one of my pregnancies started off low, the doctor called it "guarded". It worried me so much. Then I went back in for more bloodwork and the numbers had done the correct doubling, the doctor was still "guarded", but in the end I had a successful pregnancy.

Good luck, I hope everything is okay.

I wouldn't worry so much about your initial HCG level- it's the 2nd level that is the most telling about a pregnancy. As long as it doubles (or more) on your 2nd draw, then the pregnancy is thought of as progressing just fine. I had a miscarriage in between my sons and I was a nervous wreck the entire pregnancy with my 2nd son. I know how worried/paranoid you are, but just try to relax... G/L at your blood test tomorrow!
Edited to ask: Are they checking your progesterone level, as well? Even though it was never determined that low progesterone caused my miscarriage, my doc had me take oral progesterone from the day I got my positive HPT, just in case.

Hi H.,

I know you must be very stressed, I don't want to stress you more but I felt it's important to share my experience with you. My sister recently had her first miscarriage. She was not actually "trying" for another baby but when she went in for blood work, she got similar results as you. I believe her levels were 27 and the OB told her straight up, it doesn't look good. About a day or two later she miscarried......

I've had 2 miscarriages and 3 healthy pregnancies. With one miscarriage, my levels got as high as 1000 before I lost the baby. With my second, I didn't even get a chance to get lab done before miscarrying. However, after doing my lab with my 3rd (healthy pregnancy) my results were around 250 and I remember the nurse telling me I was approx 2-3 weeks along. I honestly thought I would miscarry with my numbers being so low but I did not and I had a wonderful pregnancy.

Hang in there and if you happen to miscarry keep the faith strong and be confident that you will have another baby. I wish you the best and please do keep us updated!

I went through this same thing back in March. I had a miscarriage at 10 weeks in August and a chemical pregnancy in December before that pregnancy. My initial draw was 28 for my HCG and my progesterone was on the low, but normal level. It was the second draw I had done 3 days later that was what was important. The HCG is supposed to rise (I can't remember what rate but you can google it), and the progesterone is supposed to at least double every day. With my second blood draw, unfortunately, both levels dropped and it became just a matter of time. I finally had to take cytotec at 8 weeks since the baby would not come out on its own. They did put me on progesterone after the numbers dropped, and my numbers did rise again, but only because of the hormone. With my next pregnancy, I'm supposed to start progesterone as soon as I get a positive HPT. I hope your numbers come back better than mine did! Good luck! Please let us know how Friday's results go! Those are the ones that will tell you something.

Talk to your doctor about putting you on a hormone supplement. I don't remember the numbers or even what sounds right, but with both my children I had to use a vaginal suppository because my hormone levels were low during my first trimester.
