Pregnancy Heartburn - York,PA

I'm in my third trimester and having way more heartburn than I did with my last pregnancy. I get super-thirsty during the day and it seems like water not only doesn't quench my thirst, but it adds to the heartburn. Sweet tea does the trick and doesn't give me heartburn, but I know I don't need all that sugar, etc... (Last pregnancy only lemonade would quench my extreme thirst, but I wouldn't dare try that with the amount of heartburn I'm experiencing now!)
So am I crazy? Has anyone experienced this? Water can't really be causing my heartburn, right?

What can I do next?

Water can totally flare up heartburn. Mine was so bad during my third trimester, I agreed to go on Prevacid -- although I am super anti-medication during pregnancy. It was so bad I couldn't sleep, even sitting up, and felt like I was going to vomit constantly from the acid in my chest and throat. I tried every natural remedy (drinking vinegar, eating a tablespoon of hot sauce, pickle juice) and went through so many Tums but none of it helped. If you can't take it, talk to your doctor and see what she can do.

Anything acidic, can cause heartburn. I had it a little with my son but that was because he was breach. So does the water cause the heartburn or just doesn't quench your thirst? Have you been tested for GD? That is a symptom of it. If you have to drink the sweet tea, just add the tiniest bit of sugar. Tea in and of itself is fine.

When I was pregnant and in my third trimester I got heartburn every afternoon around 4:00 even if I hadn't eaten or drank anything. It was brutal. Yes I think water could be causing heartburn your just running out of space! At least you are close to the end of your pregnancy.

This may sound silly, but have you tried different temperatures of beverages? I seemed to have more trouble with drinks that were particularly cold or hot...

I didn't look to see what other responses you've already received.... but here goes.... With my first pregnancy, the heartburn and acid reflux I had were TERRIBLE!!!! Not sure if you are a big milk drinker, but it was the ONLY thing that worked for me. Hope this helps and good luck!!!

"Extreme thirst" worries me. That's a sign of diabetes. I'm assuming you did your gestational diabetes test at 28 weeks... however, it can develop at any point. I am also concerned because a heavily sugared drink is what cures you... it may have to do with a blood sugar issue.

Eat small frequent meals (6-8 times a day). Steady food in your belly will keep heartburn at bay, as well as chewing TUMS.

Do go to your doctor and get your blood sugars/urine protein checked.

I had terrible heartburn in both pregnancies, and Tums never helped. The chalky stuff felt terrible going down and made no difference. I had a bottle of mint Maalox next to my bed and it helped a lot. I also had to sleep sitting up, laying down was torture!

Spicy food was bad for me too, and tomato based foods (pasta, pizza). There might be no pattern to it, since it's really about the hormones not what you eat.

I had that problem with my last pregnancy. Cold water was particularly evil. I sipped room temperature water through a straw. The smaller, warmer amounts helped me. I would have tried anything, including lemonade if I thought it would help. You already have heartburn so how much worse can it really get? I know that's a silly question but I remember thinking it's already bad so really bad will be relative. I heard other suggestions of flavoring the water with fruits or veggies helped too. Good luck.

When I was pregnant any "liquid" in my stomach caused my heartburn. Water, Tea, Milk - anything I had to drink. I would instead suck on ice cubes and eat saltine crackers. If that didn't help I would take a Maalox. It seemed to be the only real thing that helped

I *thought* that water diluted stomach acid, so in theory it shouldn't be causing it. All three of my pregnancies (I'm 7 weeks now) I've had severe heartburn. I never necessarily knew a cause because it was almost always there, and very painful. Tums, Rolaids, any over-the-counter anything didn't work. It got worse when I ate acidic or spicy foods. I'm only 7 weeks and it has already gotten bad with this one, so when I see my OB/GYN tomorrow I'm going to try to get something strong.

I've heard lots of water works, as well as apple cider vinegar or pickle juice. Those haven't worked for me though. Usually eating something bland and starchy helps for me. Like saltines or a handful of cheerios.

Good luck!!

Its possible that the heartburn is really a gall bladder flare up. As heartburn is one of the symptoms. Gall bladder attacks during and after pregnancy are very common.

Make sure your water isn't too cold...I found if I drank water and it was ice cold that it would cause it for me (i know, wierd right?) but making sure I didn't have ice in water seemed to help. Also, do you do yoga? I found that if I sat in certain positions on the floor (and not all frumpy on the couch) that it really helped eliminate the discomfort and often times I didn't get heartburn at all. If you don't take yoga, just try sitting cross legged on the floor with your hands behind you to support your weight and your back and try to concentrate on pressing your shoulder blades together (that will open up your chest cavity). Sit like this as long as you can to keep your chest open and give you some room in there! It REALLY helped me. Good luck!

Take a TUMS with your water. I'm 37 weeks and it gives me heartburn too, TUMS seems to help a lot... sleeping on a heavy incline helps too.

I have horrible heartburn (GERD) and was on medication prior to my pregnancy. Water has always been a trigger for me, along with certain foods/drinks. With my first pregnancy, I only used tums and was miserable - I threw up all the time from the heartburn. This pregnancy, I decided to take Zantac (I was on prilosec prior to both pregnancy's - but my doctor doesn't recommend it), and it helps a little. It takes the edge off, but I still have problems. I chew a lot of gum to keep the acid down, and milk really helps me too (and I HATE milk, never drink it prior to this pregnancy). I avoid a lot of acidic foods and carbs (particularly bagels/rolls/bread, cause they give me horrible heartburn) - especially at night. I sometimes feel like I'm on the atkins diet - cause fruits, veggies and protein (which I can finally eat again) are the only things that help keep it under control. Good Luck - your almost done. I would do whatever works best for you.
