Hey all!
I just found I was pregnant (yay!) but I've currently been on the low carb diet for the last month and a half. I still eat really healthy and I'm not starving myself or anything I just cut out breads and pastas and grains. But my question is should I stay on this diet during my pregnancy or give It up?
also ive almosted reached my goal weight, just a few more pounds! but even after i reach it i planned on staying on the diet because i feel so much better and have so much more energy since i cut out all those grains. I know im going to gain weight when im pregnant, thats inevitable and fine with me, i just dont know if staying on the diet would help maintain a healthy weight gain?

What can I do next?

I highly recommend you speak with your OB about this diet choice and your interest in perhaps staying on it.

I personally, with a nutrition background a long time ago, do not recommend any odd eating habits, especially during pregnancy. Your health will pay for it eventually. Complex carbohydrates are very important for our health and repair and maintenance. There are wonderful health benefits to eating whole grains, potatoes and brown rice. Those cannot be replaced by a pill, or supplement. Ever.

Congrats on your new baby!

I don't think anyone "needs" pasta and bread in their diet, especially the white-totally-lacking-of-anything-nutritious stuff, but of course talk to your doctor about exactly what you are eating/not eating. I imagine complex carbohydrates are probably good and necessary during pregnancy (whole grains, brown rice, etc.) Congrats!!!

Complex carbs are healthy for you. They're necessary in your diet for it to be well balanced.

Just don't do whites: bread, potatoes, pasta, sugar, etc.

Do brown rice, quinoa, bulgur, etc.

But above all, talk to your doctor about it so they can tell you the reason behind eating or avoiding carbs during pregnancy.

I've always been of the "everything in moderation" thinking. Instead of cutting out bread, why don't you just make sure it's whole grain bread, pasta, and rice. Carbs give you energy and increase seratonin (sp?). I've always heard that it's not really safe to "diet" during pregnancy, just eat healthy. Good luck and Congratulations!

I would watch what I eat but I would put the carbs back in the diet. You are eating for two as you are the "host" to the baby and baby will take what it needs from you and you will pay the price later in life. Eat Eat lots of green and yellow veggies. Do do the whole wheats for grains even pasta is made out of grains so you can have your spaghetti.

Exercise moderately, take walks and rest. You are building a baby and you need your strength to do so.

Good luck to you. Do talk to your OB about your nutrition plan. Keep us posted.

PS I was one of those moms that lost the weight and went home from hospital in regular clothes with a little tummy. I ate all I wanted and there were times while pregnant the food didn't stay down even though it was good and freshly made. I am surprised that m daughter loves apple pies as I went on a binge for about three weeks of making home made pies and losing it in the early morning hours to the porcelain god. She weighed 8 pounds at birth I was 173 and when I weighed after delivery I was 140ish. Five days in hospital (because that was the hospital's rule for the earliest release) I had a full milk supply and was ready to be a mom.

You need to ask your OB/GYN.

You need to be taking Pre-natal vitamins.

Just because you are pregnant, it does not mean you will get huge.
With my 2nd pregnancy, I only gained 15 pounds. And I wasn't even doing anything special.
But I went according to my OB/GYN.

I was on a low-carb diet when I got pregnant the first time. :)

You and your OB should come up with a plan that will work for both of you. I know that it will be tough putting on weight when you are so close to your goal, but it will happen. I know ladies that put on weight and within a month of delivery were back in to regular clothes. I was not so lucky.

The goal is to have a healthy pregnancy. Part of that is putting on weight. So as long as the weight is 'healthy' weight and not extra calories, eat a quart of ice cream in one sitting weight, you will be fine. My advice is to NOT weigh yourself unless you are at the drs. office. I know easier said then done, but your mindset for now should transition away from the number on the scale for the next few months.

I would still do the low carb. As long as your not doing No Carb. you should be fine. The healthier you eat the better you'll feel through out your pregnancy. I did really well with my last pregnancy, watched what I ate and felt so good though the whole pregnancy. So keep it up! And by the way Congrats! ;) We're pregnant together!!!!
