Today is my due date. Since yesterday I have found brown mucus in my underwear and when I wipe after using the restroom. Last night I was wide awake and kept having menstrual like cramping. Still having the cramping this morning but it hasn't been unbearable and my calves cramped up pretty badly. Please tell me this means that labor is starting.

What can I do next?

I have read the other answers and just wanted to put in my two cents worth. Yes, you are starting labor. Probably a good idea to call the doctor and let him/her know. But, if you go to the hospital, they will send you home if you are not dialated a certain amount. My suggestion would be to stay at home as long as possible. It is way more comfortable. You will be hooked up to all kinds of things once you get to the hospital and moving around is more difficult. Congratulations, baby is on it's way!

Mucous plugs can regenerate, that's not a sign of labor. However the cramping is a sign. Relax, have a bath. If you're having back pain at all start crawling around the house for everything. Back pain is a sign of bad baby position, and crawling can help to reposition the baby.

Definitely call your doctor b/c you are likely in labor!
- Make sure your bag is packed
- Eat something b/c they probably won't let you eat once you get to the hospital
- Take a shower (not a bath)
*** Congratulations!****

Brown mucus was probably your plug. Start timing those contractions - sounds like motherhood is in your very immediate future. Congratulations!!!!!!

Oh yes! By the time you read my answer, you prob will have baby! The brown stuff was your mucus plug, which protects from infection. Try to relax as most of the pain is from the resistance of labor. Breathe!
Congrats. L.

The discharge is the mucuous plug.
For number 2 three months ago I lost the plug on Sunday night, had contractions (bad cramping) every 20 minutes. Monday at 5PM I went to the clinic to get checked as the water hadn't broken yet. In fact, I had intense but spaced contractions, the water broke at 7 PM and Pia was born at 10.30 PM.
Hope this helps.

The mucus plug can come out days before labor really starts (labor can be long the first time your body goes through it), so don't worry if the contractions just stop happening ("false" contractions at this stage are fairly common). Just rest and relax, your body is getting ready. And just to reiterate other responses... Stay at home as long as possible. You can't eat at the hospital (some don't even let you drink... just ice chips) and it's hard to relax there. Don't worry about labor, no matter what happens every birth that ends with a healthy baby is a successful birth.

No need to call your OB or relatives as early 1st stage labor can be a slow process. It is perfectly fine to take a bath as long as your water hasn't broken. Relax and go about your day as you normally would. When contractions are around 4 minutes apart, lasting a minute and this has gone on for at least an hour plus you have "shut down" (not talking or wanting to move anymore) then it is time to go to the hospital - the nurses will call your OB once you are there. Trust that you and your body can do this!

Sounds like labor is getting started! This stage can last a while though so save your energy. Take a nice walk, take a nap, eat a little bit, sip water and enjoy your belly while you still can! :)

I know its tempting to sit an just time contractions, but at this stage, just trust your body, let it do its thing. Bake cookies or something distracting yet relaxing.

When you notice the contractions start to demand your attention and you need to breath through them and you no longer pay attention to things going on around you during one, then call the family and consider heading to the hospital.

When things get intense, remember, You only have to handle one contraction at a time. Don't get overwhelmed with the entire process ahead of you. One at a time!

Trust your maternal instinct! Cheering you on!!
