Pre-teen-teenager with INTESTINAL BLOCKAGE

Curious if any of you mama's have had a child who constantly has stomach aches with diarrhea? Last year my 12 yr old was diagnosed with Kidney Failure. Doctors prepaired us for the process. Quite frightening. After the ultra sound and other tests came back normal, doctors where stumped. They did an old fashioned x-ray to find that he has severe intestinal blockage.

They have him a high fiber diet and Mirolax to help with blockage. Its been about year and we took him back to doctor because he is finding that his morning BM's are so loose he almosts does not make it to the bathroom. Middle school is horrible if any of the children got wind of my son having an accident at school. It would ruin him. He is a football and soccer player, active in student council ect. So since he has gone to school with these kids for years, they know who he is, and accidents like that can ruin a kid. As a result I let him stay home from school. I have talked with the school councelors and they say kids who stay home from school typically have bad grades, he has A's and B's. He is good kid, kids like him. I am tired of him stay home from school. He is sick and tired of feeling bad. He whines that he wants to go back to the doctor to get this fixed.
I told him you have to drink more water. He will eat salads all the time instead of other foods. Anyone have any experiance with this kind of stuff??

What can I do next?

I was about to say the same thing as Paige M. Sounds to me like he needs some additional follow-up with his doctor, and a GI specialist. I'd think that once the blockage was freed, as I'm assuming it was since it's a year later, that he could trim back the amount of Miralax he uses. Miralax will loosen stool, but it's only supposed to be the consistency of soft serve ice cream. If it's looser than that, he may be able to cut back on the amount he is taking. But I'd definitely want to discuss this with a doctor, better yet, a specialist.

Best wishes.

Can you take him to a GI doctor? Sounds like he could use a new workup by a specialist. Good luck, I feel for your son. Poor kiddo.

Has he been eating the probiotic foods, like greek or Activia yogurts, or probiotic supplements? I have irritable bowel syndrome w/diarrhea and adding the probiotics to my diet has really helped keep me balanced. It doesn't cause constipation or diarrhea, just promotes a healthy balance between the two. Worth a try if he isn't already taking probiotics.

I would go to a new doctor(s) and keep pushing until they identify a cause. It doesn't sound like his current diet is appropriate for him anymore. Have you tried talking a nutritionist, also?

I was also going to say to check for Crohn's disease. My father, brother in law, cousin, and aunt all have this disease and the symptoms your son is experiencing sound similar. My father never had a firm bowel movement that I can remember when I was growing up (our house was small and we could hear everything). He wasn't diagnosed with Crohn's disease until he was almost sixty and ended up in the hospital due to a bowel obstruction. My father in law was diagnosed in his thirties and is now 65 years old and doing fine. My Dad is doing fine now too.

Poor thing! Has he seen a gastroenterologist? If not, maybe you should start there. He could also be getting too much fiber & ruffage. I know it sounds crazy but since his stools are very loose maybe that is what is happening. A doctor should be able to help you regulate that as well. If he is on any medication that could be a cause too.

Hope this helps.

Children with autism commonly have intestinal issues as well. Here is the link from TACA's website that gives suggestions on what you can do to help deal with intestinal blockages/gut issues:

Hope this helps and that he will be able to return to school on a regular full-time basis very soon.

Sounds like my husband!

Ok, wa\hat fixed this 100% whole grain breads... and store bought doesn't work. I have to bake a loaf of bread every day.
I use a bread machine
My recipe is as follows:
3.5 cups whole wheat flour
.5 cups flax seed (ground)
3 tablespoons of either honey or molasses.
1 cup dried milk
1.5 cups water
and 1 packet (or equivalent) or yeast.

He also drinks tea all the time. See if the school will allow a water bottle.

You need to go back to the doctors and find a GI specialist and have him evaluated and set up a plan.

Yes if he did have an accident it would be embarissing...but not the end of the world....would not ruin him....lets keep this in perspective. Kidney failure can ruin you...not an accident. Make a plan with him and his teachers what to do if this ever happens...like he may just disappear from class....keep extra clothes in locker, etc.

My husband has had a small bowel transpant and we deal with this type topic on a regular basis. Only it is on his job and not at school. This can be managed.

See a Pediatric Gastroenterologist.

Maybe he has IBS or something? (irritable bowel syndrome).
Certain foods, will irritate the condition.

This link tells you what IBS is:
http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/ibs_ez/

Also, with constipation, what can also occur in tandem with that is something called "Encopresis." This is an involuntary leakage of poop.
The person cannot help it.
So, the Doctor should be considering this as well.
Thus, see a Specialist.

My son's never had a blockage, but he has irritable bowel symptoms from time to time. I had to bring him home from school last week because he was in so much pain, but his last occurrence was 4 months prior to that.
There's no rhyme or reason to when an attack occurs. He has no food allergies. There's no pattern relating to what he eats or when. Sometimes we think it's stress related, but then he'll get an attack a week after a major school test and not before it.
Our pediatrician says there's nothing for it but to manage symptoms when they crop up. That means something to help with the gas, and diarrhea, and he takes warm bathes and uses a heating pad to keep the pain manageable. When he has an attack, it can last 1 to several days, but fortunately the attacks are getting less frequent.
I'm trying having him eat a small bowl of coleslaw every day now (we try different dressings to give it a bit of variety). Cabbage (raw) is suppose to be very good for intestinal problems and cabbage juice has been known to heal up gastric ulcers.
I'm hoping it gets better as he gets older (he's 12 now), but sometimes it's not something they grow out of.
It's hard sometimes, but the school nurse tells me he's not the only one and some of the kids have it much worse.

My son was on Miralax for the first 2 years and what works as a dosage one week may not work the next. i would say his dosage of Miralax is most likely too high which will cause loose stools. Have they checked to see if the blackage is gone? Why are they keeping him on Miralax for such an extended period of time? The idea is for it to clear and then monitor and have normal BM by eating correct foods/water etc.

It sounds like maybe he needs more help from ped GI or??

My son has the same thing! He has been on miralax for the last year as well. We still struggle with food choices and eating healthy (only likes two fruits and two veggies - and has texture issues!). We have follow ups though with continued xrays every 6 months to monitor the progress of the bowel emptying. My niece had as well and she eats a very good diet - took over a year to completely clear it up. When I questioned the occasional bouts of loose bowel movements, the doctor told me this was normal as his bowels cleared and should come and go over the next year to year and a half. If your son has constant loose bowels, then I would have a followup visit with his doctor - it may be time for another xray to check progress. I send my son to school - some times he ends up coming back home sometimes he can do well. Good luck
