Hi Moms,
I am wondering if anyone has experienced anything like this...It never fails every month about a week before my 13yr old gets her period she gets really bad cold symptoms. I assumed it was her immune system was low during this time of her cycle. I have made her a doctor's appt but it is not for another couple of months. All of my friends out there if you have any suggestion please help me ease my little girl's suffering.

Thanks,
T. G.

So What Happened?

First and foremost I want to thanks everyone for your responses. My daughters test results came back and everything came back normal. So she was sent to an allergist...BINGO! (you name it pet dander, dust, seasonal)...Her bodies defenses did a good job until her period time. She is now on Zyertic and for the past 3 months has been symtom free. Thanks Moms...Your're Great!

I would give her some vitamins that week and have her take a few naps or go to bed early. I used to be the same way. Every month my body would just get worn down and I would pick up any body's cold or my allergies would act up. I think extra sleep will help, orange juice and extra vitamin D (milk). Good luck!

try mega doses of vitamin c, maybe 2000 mg/day, and also add in some vitamin d.400 iud. especially during the winter months when there's less sunshine. this has done the trick for my family. good luck.

I tend to get colds and the like the week before my period too. I have always figured it's an immune system reaction to hormonal changes. I try to get more sleep and reduce stress around that time. I try to think of it as a minor annoyance. Best, D.

I seen this exact scenario on a show called The Doctors (fantastic show!!) just last week. Your daughter is experiencing these symptoms due to hormone flucuations during menstration. The birth control pill is useful to regulate symptoms. It's absolutely normal! Hope this helps!

Hi
I am an Occupational Therapist that does bodywork. I would recommend finding someone who does lymphatic drainage. It helps the immune system function more effectively. It is gentle and the therapist can give you lots of homework so that it does not involve many treatments. I would recommend upledger.com

I have to disagree with the suggestion of megadosing on a particular vitamin/mineral or two. That was a strong movement some years ago (Linus Pauling was a big proponent) but it's been shown recently to cause a lot of problems and also to be dangerous.

However, the AMA has recommended that everyone supplement because 75% of the nation does not get the nutrition we need. The Physician's Desk Reference (pretty much a "Bible" on every doctor's desk) has written that absorption of vitamin pills and other pills/capsules is pretty limited - they just aren't digested in time, and they contain a lot of fillers (even waxes and shellac!) - you may remember the reports from last year about the huge number of undigested pills in the water systems and sewage filters of many major American cities. A lot of people paid for those pills but didn't absorb them, or not all of them!

Liquid nutrition has been shown to be more highly absorbable and therefore able to function at the cellular level. I know many parents of teens who use Reliv products - their kids don't get colds at all, and many daughters (and moms!) have relief from menstrual symptoms like cramping and headaches. My friend Pam has 4 kids, and one has had phenomenal relief from issues around her period. None of them has missed a day of school in well over a year, since they started on Reliv. I used to get bronchitis about 4 times a year (and it lasted for 3 weeks each time) but I haven't had it since I started on Reliv. It supports the immune system and gives us what our diets are lacking. My husband eats what the doctors call a "perfect diet" - and even so, his cholesterol dropped 40 points on Reliv, plus he hasn't had colds. So what I'm saying is, there are many results on it so your daughter may have help in many areas.

I'd be happy to share more, and my friends would be happy to talk to you as well.

Your daughter doesn't have to live this way!

Do you have an herbalist in your area? I would suggest a fem balance tea, which will normalize her systems. This would be especially important if she's suffering from other menstrual symptoms like bloating and heavy bleeding. Rosemary Gladstar's Herbal Healing for Women is an excellent resource for anyone looking for natural answers for all stages of a woman's life. You'll benefit from it too. Sometimes a cup of tea really does make it all better.

hello T.,
those symptoms are very common to alot of women. I have found that helped me to take vitamin supplements through out the month. A great multivitamin w/extra iron might do the trick. Please discuss this option with the Dr. he'll help you decide what she really needs.
Good Luck

Poor kiddo! I would think that regular vitamins in an immune system boosting formula would help to fight anything that she's catching. Making sure she rests enough leading up to this time would probably help as well. I would think pushing more fluids about a week before would help keep her from getting as congested.
Getting your period is tough enough, and to deal with yucky cold symptoms is just plain not fair!

I understand what your daughter is going through it can happen time of month, some times your body will act like it has an cold .or an alergic reaction to something, the problem should start to go away a day after her last cycle day, i had the same thing when i was younger and i took meds for alergies and it also help with the Cramps too. ask your DR. the anti-hestamines will some times kick in just befor the cycle starts.
