Pounding Headache from Exercise?

This is kind of weird. Until a couple years ago I was quite active, commuted to work on my bike, did a lot of bike riding and walking. Usually about 30 KM a day. I have asthma, but that wasnt a big deal, I used my inhaler & was fine. Yesterday, I did some power walking. Only about 40 minutes. My head started POUNDING. crazy pain, it seemed because of my blood pressure being up? I didnt use the inhaler, but my lungs were mostly ok, I was coughing after, but not overly tight or wheezy. Used the inhaler when I got home. But my head pounded, I thought I wouldnt make it home, it hurt so much. It was fairly chilly, about 5 degrees celcius, and I do get very sore around my ears (from cold wind hitting them), but on my skull in that area. It could of been partly from that (I cant wear a hat or toque, nevermind that I look like a fool with my round head, my long hair pushes it up off my head anyways.) What the heck is wrong with me? It felt great to use my muscles (even to walk LOL, Im an old lady!) and I want to keep it up to accelerate my weightloss, but that headache was crazy. I got rid of it last night with advil, but its back this morning. Any idea whats up with me?

Definately could of been that I only drank coffee with splenda before & had only eaten a piece of cheese that day. I didnt even think of that.

What can I do next?

How much water were you drinking? Usually for me, this happens when I need to drink more. If I get the pounding headache, drinking gatorade usually helps. :)

I am willing to bet that is what the issue is after reading your addition... Caffine is a dehydrator, so that would make it even worse. Especially eating only cheese! LOL! I would reccomend that before you exercise, drink a glass of water (Smart water is really good... tastes like regular water, but has electrolytes added to help keep you hydrated.) Take water with you during your exercise, and afterward drink another glass along with a protien... even if it is just a protien bar. It may feel like you are undoing your work, but the protien is needed to allow your body to build muscle (which will replace fat...)

Good luck!!! :)

I think you hit the nail on the head with the eating. You need to fuel your exercise.

If you're going to do something like walking (which usually is done at a lower rate) you can eat pretty much anything you want. Don't forget to hydrate! That can lead to headaches too.

Are you consuming enough electrolytes? I always get a headache the first day of working out (if i haven't worked out in a while) and usually a lowfat or sugar free drink does the trick for me. I hope it gets better! Having a headache that pounding sounds like torture!

Make sure you have your blood pressure checked. As we mature we can look and feel great, but that blood pressure can sure creep up on you.

i think most likely only having coffee and a piece of cheese could be your answer but just a few weeks ago a lot of people were suffering from headaches..i had one last night..didn't realize my right side of my nose was stuffed up..so i used some Xclear nose spray and it went away..i had it bad a few weeks ago and i went to a masseuse and she totally got rid of it..perhaps you weren't getting enough air or it could have been a fluke..but try not to only just have coffee w/out food..also check and see how your neck feels ..sometimes neck/back pain leads to headaches..

hope it goes away
