Hi Moms
Just wanted to know when you started pottytraining your boys. Also are there any good books out there to read about pottytraining? Or do any of you moms have any good tricks on how to tackle pottytraining :) Thanks!

What can I do next?

My boys loved throwing cheerios in the toilet and doing target practice. Can't remember when we potty trained the first one, but the second one was potty trained in two weeks when we found out he had gotten a spot in preschool after being on the waiting list. He was a little over 3 years old. He really wanted to go to preschool, so that was enough incentive :)

I have 3 kids....2 of them are boys. Each one of my kids decided when it was ready to potty train (PT). I mean, they didn't come up to me and say, "Mom, I'm ready"...but it was something that just happened and we both knew it was time to start. My boys started when they were 3.3 yrs old and my 2nd boy was 2.7 yrs old. I have so many pottytraining books that it's crazy! Go to Barnes and Noble and ask to look at the PT section. Any books/videos is all a huge help. Also, get a training toilet and have it in the bathroom to at least get him looking at it and sitting on it....even if he is completely disinterested in going potty on it. Since boys are always obsessed with their penises, it's easier to get them to think it's cool to start peeing. Mine liked to throw a cheerio or some other target in the toilet and pee on it. Good luck, I would say picking the weekend for them to start would be a bad idea....never worked with mine and backfired in the long run. Relax and it will happen right before your eyes sooner than you think!

I waited til my son was 3y to start. Then I picked a 3 day weekend, stocked up and stayed home! Also, when hubby was home, I'd have him go with him into the bathroom.

We potty trained our son at 2 yrs and 10 months. I was told by several people that waiting 'after' 3 on boys makes it MUCH harder. My son was potty trained (both pee and poo) in 2 days using Lori Jensens "3Day Potty Training" program. My son showed NO signs of wanting to potty trained but we did it to just see (because he was nearing the age of 3) and it worked GREAT! You have to follow exactly what she says. You can get her 'e-book' online for under $30 - totally worth it. Good luck!

the 3 day potty training method seems to get some good responses.

I haven't done it yet since my son is 16months but plan on using it when he's 22 months.

I second the Lori Jensens "3Day Potty Training" program!!! It's totally worth the money!! My son had just turned 3, and with this program, my son was potty trained for everything, including night time withing 2 1/2 days. You do need to be prepared to not go anywhere for at least 2 days, so get some support. My mom hung out with me for 2 days while my hubby worked. That way I could go get my girls from school, run an errand, etc. I couldn't believe that it worked, but it did!!! Instead of candy or stickers, I gave my son a tattoo every time he succeeded--he loved it!! His body was covered--makes for a cute pic!
Good luck to you.

We started casually introducing the potty chair to my son around 18 months, and just let him use it when he wanted for the next 6-9 months. Then, at around 2- 2 1/2, we would let him run around naked (it was summer time :)), so access to the potty was easier for him, and he really used it a lot... probably 75% of the time. But the thing that finally got him going 100% of the time was a sticker chart I put up next to the potty. One column was for pee pees and one for poo poos, and he was so excited to get a new sticker every time he went, and within 3 days he was potty trained. He was about 2 1/2... now he's almost 3 and only uses a pull up at bed time, which is usually dry when he wakes up! I can't wait to be out of diapers completely! Good luck with your boy!

I have read that a majority of moms have started potty training their boys between ages 2-3 but of course when their LO showed interest so as not to force it. Also, my favorite potty training technique is the rewards system...give your LO a treat - candy, toys, stickers, whatever - whenever he uses the toilet and keeps his underwear dry...check out these other ideas:

Good morning!

We just got our son potty trained a couple months ago (he was about 2 years and 10 months also) without books (at least the potty training kind). We started when he was really young (18 mos?), before a shower we would put him on the potty, mainly to get him used to it. He would pee and that was a good start. No pressure tho because I saw so many horror stories about boys having "performance issues". Anyway, once it was crunch time I took him every 30 minutes without fail for about 2 days. Then after that I stretched it out to every hour. That went on for a day or two. In the meantime he got to wear his Lightning McQueen underwear during the day and a diaper at night. After about a week of dry overnight diapers I let him sleep in undies. But not without putting a plastic trash bag between his sheet and his mattress. He has had a couple accidents (none over night tho!) but none since I would consider him totally trained.

As for the books I mentioned earlier: I took a que from my husband who likes reading material (surprisingly not the inappropriate kind!) in the bathroom. We call it the library for a reason :) Anyway, when I took my son potty, I would read to him. We got him a few of the step 1 early reader books and at the same time we were potty training we started teaching him to read. Now, everytime he has to poop, he asks us to read to him...probably because he knows he's gonna be in there for a while ;)

It's going to be difficult, but DON'T GET FRUSTRATED! (I did and it didn't help...) Be consistent, that's key. My thinking is, potty training is supposed to save you money...not cost more.

Good luck!

My mother started doing it for us when our son was 1 years old! We thought she was crazy. She would babysit him 3 days a week and bought a potty and put him on it a few times a day. He got used to it. By 18 months he was pooing in the toilet and would only poo in the toilet. He no longer liked pooing in his diaper. And he was in underwear with diapers/pull-ups at night by 26 months. Earlier the better - that way they aren't scared of it. The new underwear with cartoon characters was a good incentive for him too.
