I am in the process in trainning my boy and I was wondering how or what you do with potties that don't have the peepee shield. I have tried to help him point it down but he does not like that and I have also tried using TP to point it down as well. What do you do when not at home???

What can I do next?

I grew up with 4 brothers and my mom always had a coffee can with a lid on it. I used to carry a potty chair in my van for my daughter. Public restrooms can be so dirty I hated to take her in one! Good Luck.

I only ever taught my son to stand, so when we go to public restrooms, we stand. When he was younger and he couldn't reach, I would either lift him up or let him stand on my feet to go potty. Not sure if that helps any, but it is sooooooo much easier to teach a boy to stand, than sit.

I have always just took his sorts/pants off and then turned him around on the bottom so where your butt cheek would go his legs up in that area. I hope that makes sense! anyway, then when you point the pee pee down it actually goes into the toliet bowl. Hope this helps!

Hi J.,
I did the face-backwards thing. The stand-on-the-ring and pee in the hole thing. I also carried a children's potty in my car, and I'd have my son "go" in a discreet place in the parking lot before we went into, and right after coming out of a store, restaurant, etc. to avoid certain public restrooms (ahem!)

He's 100% trained now, but I still carry the seat for longer days and traveling.

They also make portable potty rings (with pee guard) that I've heard other Mama's rave about :)

Hi J.! :-)

Being the mother of 4 boys, I have learned that starting out by teaching them to sit "backwards" is the easiest way to make the transition to standing up when they are bigger. And, if and when we are out and about in public potties--which the child will ALWAYS seek out--I would have them stand on my feet to help them be taller. (I really do not want their peepee touching the public toilet). Another thing I have taught my boys from the start is to wipe the toilet bowl with TP when they are done so as to not leave a mess. The younger ones still do it today. :-) (I think their future wives will be thankful for that little bit of instruction) ;->
Also, another thing I emphasize to all of my children is to go potty BEFORE we leave the house because you never know if there will be a toilet where we will be going... Some places (I think it's mostly in Okinawa where I saw this) have miniature urinals in the women's bathroom--that is awesome because the boys that tag along in the bathroom are the younger ones. I wish this country would do that. I would then try to remember where those smaller toilets were so when my children had to go potty, I would know which bathroom to take them to.

Good luck!!

A little bit about me: My husband and I have been married for 13 years now and are proud parents of 5 active and wonderful children--4 boys and 1 girl. Ranging in ages from 12 down to age 4. I've learned a bit over the years and am willing to share my "wisdom" with anybody who is willing to listen. :-)

set them backwards on the toilet so they face the tank. This is how I use to teach my teachers to do it when I ran a preschool & this is how I do it when potty training at my homecare.. good luck!!!

I have stood my son up on the actual toilet seat, and let him pee down into the toilet. I also sit him backwards on the toilet if they have toilet covers. It is a pain since you have to take off one leg of their pants. But sooo worth it to not have an accident!!

One thing that we tried was having my son lean over the potty. This puts it in a position that it will point down automatically. This is how we taught him to potty standing up. They feel more comfortable because no one is touching them and they also get that feeling of independance. Good Luck!!
