Potty Training with G Diapers

Just looking for some advice about potty training. We have been using g diapers with my daughter and have been quite happy with them for the most part. She is starting to show some signs of readiness for toilet training and I am not sure how to deal with the g diapers. Anyone have good advice for training with g diapers or cloth diapers? She can't take a g diaper on and off herself. I thought maybe we should switch to pull ups for the toilet training but after almost two years without using disposables I kind of hate to change now. Any advice would be great!

What can I do next?

We used cloth pull ups. They had a one piece cotton liner with nylon cover that had elastic waist and legs.
My daughters could pull them up like underwear but they absorbed accidents like cloth diapers.
I don't remember where we found them- it was 6 years ago! But I think One Step Ahead sell something similar.

HI E., I'm in the process of potty training our daughter as well! She has been doing well, but only when she is bare bottomed- I have found this to be most effective. As soon as I put any sort of diaper or pull up on she goes to the bathroom in them. ONce we've established things with a bare bottom, I'm going to try regular underpants. The pull-ups feel too much like diapers for her, so there is really no difference between them (except that I've had to cut them off when she poops in them!!! LOL!). Good luck!

I used a combination of cloth pullups and the disposable ones. We really liked the cloth ones, but got a bit lazy occasionally and fell behind on the laundry. We got them at zannadu.com

Hi E.,

As other moms have noted, there are several kinds of cloth training pants that work well for potty training. We sell three different kinds at our store, Diaper Lab in Somerville, and they each work well depending upon where you are in the potty training process.

Imse Vimse cloth trainers are organic cotton but DO have a layer of waterproofing sandwiched in between the cloth layers. These are definitely for later in the process when you just want to catch the occassional accident or for a long car ride.

Bummis trainers are several layers of cotton flannel on the inside and have waterproofing similar to their diaper covers on the outside. These work really well to prevent leaks.

Happy Heiny's makes trainers as well, and these work very similarly to pocket cloth diapers. They are fleece lined on the inside, have a pocket to add an absorbent insert, but have waterproofing on the outside. These also have snaps on both sides to make a poop accident much easier to clean than the Bummis or Imse Vimse brand. Many people find that they like these for the very beginnig of the training process because they can add as much absorbency as needed, or for nights when a toddler is trained during the day but not at night.

The advantage to using cloth training pants over disposable pull ups is that the toddler will feel more wet and be more inclined to potty train.

Good Luck, and feel free to come by the store, call or email if you have any additional questions.

Hi E.,

I loved the cloth training pants. We bought them at babies r us and I think Gerber put them out. They come in plain or cute prints and are thick in the crotch. My daughter wore them long after she was trained simple because she found them so comfortable. Most kids who are really receptive to training don't have many accidents. You can tell if your daughter is getting ready if she is waking up dry. Once you establish the first pee of the morning on the potty, you can feel safe to get rid of diapers. Once you have made a committment to train you really can't be out for long periods of time she simple is not going to give you much warning. The training pants will still let her feel wet which is important. Too absorbent and she will be too comfortable to be motivated. If your daughter is having alot of accidents, she probably isn't ready yet.

When my cloth-diapered daughter said she wanted to use the potty, we spent about a week me pulling them on and off before I just went to Kmart and got 3 packs of training underpants, which are just underpants with a couple extra layers at the crotch. (wound up with 5 packs, total, I think)

I also ordered 4 training pants from Zannadu.com, that have a waterproof outer. I returned 2, since they weren't going to be my primary. We use those if we're going to be in the car for a while, for example.

Hi E., I have to say to go with pull-ups . It works like an underwear, take em down like undies to go pee and pull em back up when child is all done. I work with toddlers and there are about 11 of them in my classroom.
Some with the ages of 2 1/2 are the ones we see are ready for potty training. Some come back from the weekend and are all set. Sit your child down at least every two hours and even when they just want to sit there for 5 minutes the longest or so. It will take at least 2 good weeks with lots of patience. But, yes pull ups will work. Give it a try. Buy the ones that are resealable on the sides.
My friend, she doesn't believe in pull ups at all. She told me her son went straight into underwear. whatever works for you and your child. Also give rewards when they do a good job ! They love that ! Good luck to you both !

When I potty trained my older daughters, I switched immediately to panties. I liked someone else's idea of using cloth training pants, too. Good luck! (Oh, and I never liked the idea of Pull-ups--they're just glorified diapers, in my opinion.)

Almost need to say "in my day" here...hehehe...we did not have disposable diapers til oh, perhaps mid-sixties.
So all our babies were in cloth diapers.
We had ( have, am currently successfully using this technique on grandson) a method of toilet training that is easy and effective.
At about a year and half old we started the verbal part of potty training...the big girls/boys go potty...how nice it is to be dry and not stinky..big bros and sis, mum and dad all use potty...can go to store for big girl/boy panties ..really doing it up for encouragement and to plant the idea firmly in their minds.
Next step, preferably wait for warm weather...buy a nice potty and wrap it up like a present...take the diaper off.
Be sure to say you would not pee/poo on Mummy's floor, yes?
Ok they will have a few cant get there in time mistakes..but generally they will get to their potty...we put it right by the toys.
This part takes a couple weeks with the bare buttand you will need to mostly stay home. (Diapers for naps and night tho for some time but rush them to potty after nap) You want to give enough time bare to firmly instill the idea that when they need the potty that they need to stop whatever they are doing and that is where they go to do their business.
After a few weeks...you will pass the "I-dont-want-to-pee-in-my-potty" stage..this is good..this means they are beginning to know they need to stop playing and get to the pot.
Then you can try the panties..I find the pullups next to useless. If they feel anything, cloth, paper, whatever, covering them they will generally not make the slightest effort to get to pot and just go in whatever is on them.
Praise the successes up mightely..have the child help dump the potty and flush the toilet..tell Dad, Gram, Gramps, in front of the child with great pride in your voice...be sure to say " didnt you?" so they can participate in the pride.
When the child IS ready, it should only take two or three weeks to potty train using this method. Girls are usually ready earlier than boys...up to a year or more earlier.
Best wishes and God bless
Grandmother Lowell
