Potty Training While Away from Home - Montgomery,TX

I have been potty training my 24 mo. old for two weeks and things are going great but I have a major dilema. My older child plays football and we go to practice 4 days a week for about 2 hrs. There is no bathroom, porta potty or anything at the practice field. What do I do when my daughter needs to go to the bathroom? I have thought about bringing her potty and taking her to the car but we have to park a very long distance from the actual field and there is NO WAY she would ever make it that far without having an accident and I can't just bring her potty and pull down her pants on the side line! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I hate to tell her to just go in her pull-up when she is doing so good.

So What Happened?

A BIG thanks for all of the wonderful respones. Every single one was great! I think I will start by bringing the potty in the car and taking her every 20-30 min. I think this may work. If anything else, it breaks up the time we have to just sit! Thanks again!

I would bring her potty and maybe set a timer of somesort cuase unfortuanately they have a tendency to wait till the last min. maybe take her potty every 30 mins while at practice. Give her a chance to go before you go to practice and then go as soon as you get there, then every 30 min after till finished .... you are right not to tell her to go in her pull-up

If/when you do take the portable potty chair, place a large ziplock back (an HEB bag works too) inside the cup area. Put an open pull-up or a lot of toilet paper in it to absorb the urine. Then, when it is time to go, all you have to do is close the bag and throw it away. No liquid mess. I did this when we would go camping.

This might sound weird but we go camping a lot and they make these pop-up shelters that can be used for showers/privacy.
Sounds like the practice field would be a good place to set one up and put her potty inside. You can get them at places like Academy and Bass Pro Shops. They make different kinds, I would just pick the one with the easiest setup/take down.
Just place a bag with absorbant material in the bottom of the potty for easy cleanup and let her go.

Do you NEED to stay at the practice for the entire 2 hours? If not, run errands and stay within range of a potty.

definatly bring it with you. do you let her go every 20 mins or so if so start heading to the car a few mins before the intervals. or just take several trips out there durring the game. good luck. * after reading Sarah O's responce it made me think of those easy to pop up tents for kids there about ten bucks at the dollar tree/family dollar. just put the potty in there.

I would just go ahead and bring the potty! It's fine...if you had a boy they would pee in the field, so why not bring the potty for the girl! you could put a plastic bag in it, for easier clean up. Don't worry about what others think....seriously what are you supposed to do if they don't have bathrooms. I have done this at parks where there is no bathroom and have seen others do it as well. I think it's better for the kids too, rather than confuse them with diapers and then also having accidents all the time.

Can you carpool with another football mom/ dad? 2 hours to sit and wait for practice to finish is a REALLY long time 4 days/ week. I'd go meet some other moms/ dads, find out who lives near you and carpool. One takes to, the other brings home and nobody has to sit near the field for 2 hours.

It works with swimming, Boy Scouts, and VBS!

When my daughter was potty-training and we were at a park without a potty around, I would just take her around a tree or away from people a bit and hold her by the legs in a sitting position so she could pee on the ground without getting herself all wet. Could you take your daughter behind some bleachers or something? When a potty-training kid has to go, you've gotta do what you've gotta do. :)

You can always buy one of those kiddie play tents ahd put it up at the practice so she can play and still have a prvate place to go potty....
We spent lots of time camping and so forth when my girl was at that atage it did wonders for her self-esteem. And we took lots of potty wipes with us as well - along with hand sanitizer to teach hygeine as well.
good luck and I hope this helps.

This is similar to what I bought for my daughter

LOL!
I agree with the "just bring the potty on the sidelines" theories, and I was going to suggest a kids pop-up tent as well, if needed.

If it makes you feel any better, my youngest, at 2 1/2 started hollering to go potty, -immediately- after we dropped my husband at the airport. So I whipped over to the side, and brought her to the hatchback to use the "travel potty." (I LOVE my one-piece Baby Bjorn, and a friend got an even better one at IKEA. You just drop a disposable diaper in it to catch everything, then wrap it up, just like you used to.)

So, here we are, parked in front of a sign that says as big as Dallas, "NO PARKING". . . one of those security dudes comes at me with a whistle. . . as soon as I stepped aside and started to explain that "when she's gotta to, she's gotta go," he dropped the whistle, turned, and practically RAN back to the terminal. :-D

Best of luck. It sounds like you're doing great!

A K,

You sound like such a great mom! Do you have a little pop up play tent? If so, you could bring it with you to the field along with her potty and pop it up when she needs to go. I know it sounds like a lot to manage, but it might help her be able to go with privacy.

Good luck,
C.
