POTTY TRAINING: When Wil They WANT to Go??

I have 3.5 and 2.5 year old girls. They both know how to use a toilet. They both have peed and pooped in the toilet countless times. BUT they still refuse to do it on a regular basis. We've done the "go every hour" thing for 2 weeks straight. We tried a talking potty. We've tried treats. We've tried stickers. These thigns work for a while but then the girls say "NO" when we ask and/or tell them to use the toilet. We've told them that big kids need to stay dry and clean. STILL they constantly pee in their underwear. I've gotten so frustrated with the 3.5 year old that now she insists on wearing a pull-up because she is "afraid to pee on the floor." Will they ever magically decide that the toilet is the way to go?!

What can I do next?

Oh my gosh! My daughter did the same thing. Yes, they will, as I say "get with the program" on their own, in there own time. My daughter did. I've heard a lot of moms say their kid just decided "one day" to start going potty and was fully potty trained. For us, it was a very gradual process. I tried rewards, punishments, encouragement, mild embarrassment...nothing worked. I finally had to explain to my child that I wasn't going to get upset anymore and she was going to have to choose to be a "big girl". I used pull-ups until she finally "got it". She was 3 1/2. Staying calm when she had accidents was the hardest thing. So, give yourself a break and them too. Try going back to a more relaxed approach and hang in there!

I have 2 boys, and we never used pull-ups with either of them. I've heard it slows down the process. Good luck. Potty training is my least favorite part of parenting. My boys were 3 years and 2 months, and 3 years and 4 months when they were completely trained. It takes some longer than others. I think the trick is waiting until they are ready. We are usually ready long before they are. :-)

I agree, too. Get rid of the pull-ups. I potty trained for several years at a day care. Pull-ups just confuse the kids.

My personal suggestion:
Get the girls "training" underwear. They are thicker (not much, but enough). Do NOT get the kind with pictures on them. Make the training underwear the everyday underwear with the promise to buy the "pretty" panties if the girls will keep them clean and dry.

When you finally DO get the picture panties, remind the girls that "Barbie does NOT want to get wet." or "Barbie does NOT want poo-poo on her head."

Good luck!

i would take off the pull ups and let her go on the floor, then she has to help clean it up. a couple times of that and she'll learn it's easier and quicker to go on the potty. i think once the older one goes constantly the younger one will want to be like her but the younger really may not just be ready yet. one thing that worked for my dd was i had a hand held game that she could only play with while she was on the potty, she was good in about 3 days. good luck.

I agree with the last post get the pull up out of the house and let them pee and poop on themselves. They will eventually get tired of it and start going. Also make them clean up their own mess I know it sounds nasty, but they need to do it. My daughter was potty trained in 3 days by using just big girl panties. She wet herself a lot the first 2 days, but by the 3rd she was going by herself with no accidents. Even at night no pull ups just panties if they have an accident have them help clean it up. It is hard to do, but it will click and they will start going potty on their own.
