My son is potty trained.... as long as he is naked. he doesn't have any accidents and hasn't for months now, but as soon as we put underwear on him he uses them like a diaper. Occasionaly he will still use the potty but he doesn't take his underwear and just pees through them. How did you guys get your child to understand the whole underwear thing??

Thanks for the responses. We did not use pull ups I felt like they would be just like a diaper. His dad has been great at showing him what he is suppose to do with underwear. I will try just the pants thing, i'm also a laid back mom and if it helps him learn i am all for it! And I have tried the whole don't pee on manny (or whoever he has on) he won't like it thing and he still does it.
My son forgets sometimes, because diapers & pullups are soft like fabic now, it's hard to tell the difference. Try going with loose fitting clothes like windbreaker pants, to practice with. When you're ready to try underwear, go with something other than briefs. My son does well with boxer-briefs, I think because they fit & feel much different from a pullup. Good luck, hang in there.
just remind him to go. When I would drop my son off at preschool we had some silly little rhyme we would say about not wetting our pants. Its hard because their part is covered and so they tend to forget about it. Tell him to go potty every couple of hours (I say tell him, not ask him--My SIL keeps complaining that my 4 yo nephew won't go for her--she asks if he has to go-the answer is always no. I am watching him this weekend, I tell him to go, he goes) When he keeps his underwear dry, tell him that the character on it is very happy he stayed dry and didn't get pee pee on him. Also, if possible a male role model, like his daddy, will be a huge help here. They have the same equipment. I told my husband he had to show him how to use it.
Regular underwear or pull ups? I put my boys in regular underwear to potty train, pull ups were just like diapers. I got them underwear with characters they liked and told them not to "pee" on Mr. so and so...I haven't needed to put them in any therapy so I guess it was okay! Good Luck!
Hi J., I have the same exact issue. My son is 33 months old and the only way potty training works for us is having him naked from the waist down. He'll go on the big potty in the bathroom and the little potty in the living room. As soon as I put his cool big boy underwear on, he goes #1 and/or #2 in them and gives no notice that he needs to go. I remind him constantly to keep McQueen dry, but it doesn't seem to work and I stay by his side ready to pull them down. He wears pull ups when we are not potty training, so I'm wondering if they are too similar to the underwear and he thinks it's okay to go in them both. I would love some help too.
This may sound heretical, but what happens if you put his pants on him without underwear? Would he pee through his pants? I am a pretty laid back mom, so I wouldn't have a problem with my boy (especially) wearing his pants without underpants underneath. I think, eventually, he would want to wear underwear, especially if he sees grownups (mom or dad or both) wearing underpants and not peeing in them. Maybe he could watch dad go potty?
We did naked time for a couple weeks whenever we were home. Then we decided to take the dive and go with underwear. We reminded him every 30 mins to go potty, and if he didn't go one time we made him try the next. It only took a week and he had it down.
