Potty Training... Sort Of???

My son, who is now 3, potty trained at 2 and a half with NO issues at all. One day we put him in his little boxer briefs and he was good to go (to this day he has only had one accident). We were able to go places within a couple days and it was never an issue. My daughter began showing signs of readiness at around 18 months but after a few unsuccessful trial runs of big-girl panties we decided to wait. A couple of weeks ago she started telling me she wanted to "pee-pee toilet" while she had her diaper on so we decided to go into potty training 100%. She has been doing very well while we are at home though she has had 2 accidents in route to the potty. The problem is when we are out of the house. We went to Target the other day and despite going just before we left she peed in her underwear. I had asked her if she needed to go just before it happened and she said no. Another day we went to the park and I put a pull-up on her "just in case," asked her several times if she wanted to go to the bathroom and took her just before we left the house and she still went in her pull up. Both of these instances took place less than an hour after she had gone the last time and she only goes every 2-3 hours when we are at home. She always tells us when she has to go when we are at home, either on her own or after we ask. So my question is, does this mean she is not truly ready to be potty trained? I am scared to go somewhere now with her in underwear but I don't want to confuse her by letting her wear diapers sometimes either... we established the whole, "Diapers are only for night-night" thing when we started training her. I am just not sure what to do now, I don't want to abandon the whole thing now b/c she is doing so well at home but I don't know if this accident thing is normal since we didn't go through it w/my son (maybe b/c he was a little older). What do I do?? Any advice would be great!!! :)

So What Happened?

Thank you for all the advice! The way we have been successful is so funny and odd that I have to share it - my daughter has started to hold it while we are out and use all of the public toilets as long as I let her stand up like her 3 year old brother! She stands on the seat with one foot on each side and squats a little bit (like you would in the woods I guess) and goes like a champ! She squats just enough so that it comes straight out w/o going to the side. A little unconventional I know but I guess I won't have to worry about her sitting on a dirty toilet when we are out - lol. I am so happy to be diaper free!!! :) :)

Hi Robyn-
I went through a similar situation with my daughter. She was fine when we were in our home but seemed to have accidents each time we went out. I wanted to give up the whole potty training because it was much more inconvenient to have the accidents nor did I want to be home bound all day.

For us, it seemed that she needed almost to mark her new territory. Even now, we almost always have to visit the bathroom when we are in a less then familiar location. It seems to give her some comfort.

What we did was: get a travel potty, encourage her to use the public ones when in the community and stay positive and encouraging. I would ask her if she wanted the pull up or the panties before we went out. We did not have the rule that you mention, I would let her try to let me know what she needed. I do also recall scaling back on activities in the community if the potty was going to be an issue (shorter trips out, etc)

Hope this helps! You are doing a great job!

My daughter did the exact same thing. I read somewhere, that it is a control issue. Dont know if its true or not, but they said to ask everyday "do you want to wear a diaper or big girl panties today?" So I tried it and it worked. Maybe in your case, only do it when you're about to go somewhere. I also thought my daughter's bladder was really small or something cuz she would have just gone and then pee her pants like 10 minutes later! My MIL was pressuring me to pottytrain her since she was watching her and so I think I just started pressuring her too early.

My son didn't like useing public "big"" pottys so he did the same thing as your daughter, so we got this portable potty seat and used it home for a while and then he didn't have a problem useing it out of the house, but we used pullups as bye bye pants too. I would also suggest getting a piddle pad I think that's what it's called by kiddapodamus it will save you the hassel of taking apart your car seat if there is an accident in the car. I stopped useing pullups at one point and started useing store brand diapers so his choice was be a big boy or wear a diaper and he didn't like that a bit because then he was no different then his baby brother and what fun is that. He'd say "no baby diaper!" and I'd tell him I didn't have any pullups but he could wear underwear and go in the potty if he wanted and it worked well.

Hi Robyn! :)

I used the doll method, "Potty Scotty" with my son. It worked really well!! They learn by teaching the doll. It comes with a manual and it's fast and fun! :)

Good luck!

Hi Robyn,
My opinion is to keep up the good work. Keep encouraging her when she goes to the bathroom. Maybe give her some kind of reward when you are out if she goes in the toliet. I used the mini m&m's, I would just give them a couple not the whole tube. And so what if you have to take an extra change of clothes. I know it's a hassel sometimes but just think, hopefully within a few short weeks, no more diapers!

I went to the doctor last month about this same thing with my two and a hlaf year old daughter. He said that sometimes an infection can cause them to not feel the urge to pee properly and that they can't tell that they have to go until it is too late. He was right! We checked her urine and she did have a small infection. He treated her with antibiotcs(i can't spell) for five days and then we waited another week(drinking lots of cranberry juice just to make sure) and things were much better! I am not saying that your child is sick but if you keep having this problem or if she starts complaining about her potty or tummy, you might want to have this checked out.
