Potty Training Question - Tampa,FL

My 2.5 year old is partially potty trained and I'm trying to figure out a way to complete the process. When at home and bare bottomed, he consistently uses the potty without any accidents. When I put underwear on him at home, he usually goes to the potty but occasionally forgets and pees. When I put underwear and shorts or pants, he forgets and pees. He poops only in the potty, even when he has a diaper on he will ask to go to the potty.
He is in daycare full time during the week, it's a whole different story. He will not ask to use the potty and will pee when taken throughout the day about 50% of the time. Per daycare policy, he must wear a diaper or training pants until he is accident-free in underwear and pants. He doesn't seem to differentiate diaper from training pants - both give him permission to pee and not use the potty.
Any suggestions as to how to progress to the next step? He seems to know the signals and is able to hold it for a while, but forgets or gets lazy when wearing something. Anyone else in similar situation? What has worked?

Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks, Jaimee, I do remind him every morning to use the potty and tell his teachers when he needs to pee.

Sounds like you son is just a few steps away from being trained. It will take a few weeks to learn to go from bare bottomed to undies or trainers, and then it takes some time for them to really learn timing. It also sounds like your son still has some bladder control to develop, since they take kids at daycare to the potty often enough that most kids can hold it between potty trips.

I say just relax, keep on putting him in his trainers, don't make a big deal out of accidents (oh, did you go in your pants? I'm sorry, maybe next time we will get to the potty in time. If you feel pressure here, yell "mommy potty!"), and hang tight. There is sooo much to learn to be fully potty trained (control, then the ability to hold it, then timing). When he is at a 90% success rate in trainers, then buy him "special undies." Till then, no undies, just trainers. I found what motivated my kids with special undies. It was Elmo undies for my daughter. Thomas with my son. With both, they night trained a few weeks after going into their special undies during the day because they wanted to wear their undies to bed. (Full disclosure: I also moved them into cloth diapers at night when they moved into undies during the day and I know this contributed as well. Also of import, they were both under 2, so power struggles weren't an issue yet.)

A few other things: 2 and 3 year old are very distracted, so expect accidents even after days upon days of no accidents. They can also have accidents when totally melting down as they lose all control.

If you haven't already, I say try a diaper over the underwear. He should still feel wet without the mess. Consistency between home and daycare should help, too.

Maybe you can talk to him before daycare each time. Remind him not to go potty in his pants. Keep doing this everyday. Good luck to you!

You are lucky you're this far with a two and a half yr boy! It will come, don't worry and don't persist or he will resist.
