Potty Training Peril...

what kind of ups and downs did you experience in potty training? We've gone from no accidents all day in panties, to multiple accidents the next day to refusal to wear panties. Last week she told us she needed to poop and went to the potty and POOPED! Now we're back to I want to wear diapers to poop in. Right now we're switching between diapers, pull-ups and panties depending on her mood for the day. Most of the time she stays dry (with the exception of night time) regardless of what she is wearing. I imagine this is not unusual. I'm trying to play it cool...What's your experience?

PS Cleaning poopy underwear is one of the nastiest things I've ever done.

Add On: she is 2 1/2 yrs old

So What Happened?

This morning we said "bye bye diapers" and took them out of her room. From this point on we're in pull ups until we're ready for panties. I always said I would never use pull ups, however they are easy to pull up and down (which she was trying to do with her diaper ) and it doesn't stress her out to wear them like the panties. So for now we will wait until the next phase.

How old is she?

There are a couple ways to potty train kids and it just depends. I chose the potty train late and do almost no "work" method. I simply waited until she was ready to really OWN the whole process - which in her case was around 2.5 years old. We potty trained in a weekend with a few accidents and then she was virtually potty trained from that point forward with no accidents at all.

I would say you are letting her have too much "inappropriate" control. She wants to be in control, but you have to guide WHAT she can control.

I would have a conversation with her and tell her that if she's ready to go 100% you will support her.... but otherwise it's back to diapers until she's fully ready.
Good luck

Our daughter did not potty train until she was almost 4. Not for the lack of me trying to get her to potty train, she just was not ready..

This is a child that had reached so many milestones early (walked at 6 months, spoke full sentences at a year, fed herself early, slept through the night at 6 weeks, was reading on her own as she turned 4. ..) , I assumed she would also reach this milestone early..

No such luck.. It just did not click with her, what her body was doing..

She was in day care and once she saw the little potties all lined up and the other children sitting there reading books, she was able to kind of put it together on her own.. Only took her 2 days to be completely potty trained. She was just ready..

How old is she? There are a couple ways to handle this. Do you feel she is simply not ready to use the potty consistently yet? If so there is not much you can do that you're not already doing. Or do you feel she is old enough that she is being defiant? At 2 1/2, or so my mom says, I was totally ready physically to potty train but didn't feel like it because my little sister still got to keep playing while I was on the potty and I had to interrupt my activities. To solve it my mom took a day where every accident I had I had to sit on the potty longer, until I was basically on the potty all day. After thatone day I never had an accident again. So it all depends.

It would help if you would tell us exactly how old she is.

What you are going through is normal. Don't push her, don't punish and don't get angry at her. (Playing it cool is right.) I'm glad you went back to diapers - that's the best thing.

She is not ready, and when a child is not ready, they will not potty.

Night time dryness is a totally different animal and comes later. Again, no pushing.

Good luck, and sending you strength!!

They can control when and how they poop, so it's one of those areas where they will resist from time to time. Also, there are always lots of regressions, if they are 3 and under. So when they move forward (poop training or night training), expect regressions. In fact, my son peed his pants for three days after being pee trained for months, and then he poop and night trained. It's them working things out.

It's best to not worry about, expect some accidents, and just focus on something else.

With my oldest I pushed to early and it was horrible for both of us.

With my youngest I waited it out until she wanted to come forth, which never happened. But it wasn't until just before her 3rd birthday when I finally pushed her.

The best choice I made was waiting it out. And also when I decided to go for it, we went for it. We got rid of diapers and pull ups. Yes, there were accidents but there was also no looking back and they knew that.

Good luck!
