Potty Training Overnight.

Hi All. I posted a few weeks ago about my almost-two-year-old-daughter who wanted to use the potty, but I didnt think she was ready. I WAS WRONG. She was definitely ready, and within a week, she was totally trained. (I am counting my blessings on that one)

She wears underwear at nap time, wakes up dry and never has an accident during the day.

Nighttime is another story. I put a diaper on her, because she has yet to make it all night dry.

But, she doesnt like to pee in the diaper. So, around 11:00 at night, she wakes up calling for me. Most of the time I get to her in time to take her to the potty. Sometimes, I dont and she wets her diaper. Either case, she has a hard time getting back to sleep.

What do you do for overnights during potty training? Should I just put underwear on her overnight? Is that easier than trying to break the diaper habit later on? Do you think she will be less apt to pee so quickly if she doesnt have a diaper on, knowing that she will be wet in her underwear?

Any tips?
THANKS!

Additional info: She is in a bed and has been since she was 16 months old. She doest use a little potty, only the big potty with her special potty seat. She isnt quite able to get up there by herself, yet. So, her going potty in the middle of the night without assistance isnt an option as of yet. :)

What can I do next?

Is she in a bed? I havent done this yet with my daughter but plan to put her little potty next to her bed at nighttime so she has fast access if she needs it. I will put it next to her nightlight and leave out a wipe for her. This is my best idea, I guess the worst thing that can come out of it is a whole lot more laundry! LOL.

I say go for the underwear and let there be accidents. I noticed my daughter would wet her nighttime pull-up every night, but would only occasionally wet her undies in the begining. She quickly stopped the accidents. That's great that she is getting up to pee, but be quick and keep it dark (nightlight in the bathroom) to rush her back into bed. Also, make her bed twice: waterproof pad, set of sheets, waterproof pad, and a set of sheets. This way, if she does have an accident, you just pull off the first set of everything and the next one is right there. No bed changes at 3AM!

Hi Crystal!
Yeah to you! I'm thrilled that it worked out for you. Overnight potty training...I wouldn't push it. You said your daughter doesn't like diapers but will she do a pull up? My son (3 1/2) wears the huggies overnight protection pullups. They aren't bulkie at all. They have stars on the front of them that fade if he pees. He wakes up every morning and looks to see if he has the stars. We've gone almost 10 days now with dry nights. And we've done nothing to train him. Our pediatrician told us that we shouldn't even worry about potty trainging overnight yet. If it happens on its own great...but not to worry if it doesn't. Most kids start doing this when they are 5 or 6. So you are WAY ahead of the game! If this is something that you really want to see happen, no liquids after dinner. I know a lot of parents wake their child up around 11 or so and take them to the bathroom too. Best of luck

I say no liquids after dinner...a drink with dinner and a bedtime routine that doesn't require a sip of water...my kids got nothing after 5pm til they were trained...it sounds mean but she's little with a little bladder...have her pee at bath time and right before bed(you probably already do)...if she gets something to drink now it may take 3 or 4 days to break the habit but it'll be fine after that...as for no diaper...if she lets you put it on her I would, it's a lot faster to change a diaper than a bed in the middle of the night, but if you want to take off the diaper maybe get those cribsavers(you lay them on top of the bottom sheet and they are waterproof) that might help if she's not all over the bed(they're kind of small, especially if she's in a big bed)...good luck!
