My niece is 2 and a half and my sister is having a hard time potty training her. My sister has two other children - 8 and 6 and watches my daughter when I work who is 11 months. My niece is scared to poop in the toilet. Even getting her potty trained in just going pee on the toilet has been very difficult for my sister.

Are there any ideas out there on how to potty train stubborn little girls who are scared to go poop on the potty?

Fantastic book called "It Hurts When I Poop" (I don't recall the author and lent the book to a friend), but I bought it from Amazon.com and I think it was about $12. It worked within 2 days!!! My daughter was terrified to go poop on the potty and it became screaming and sobbing matches - both me and her - we were both frustrated. The book describes what happens to food when you eat it and how we need to get rid of the poop to keep our bodies "clean" and healthy. I would recommend this book to anyone having potty training issues (and I have too!). Good luck!!

Our son was also afraid to poop on the potty. He was older, 3 1/2 to 4, but we'd been trying to potty train him since 20 months old! We had him trained to go pee for a while and finally had to go cold-turkey with the pull ups because he would only poop in a pull up. He would go into his room and put one on and then poop. If we hid them, he'd climb chairs... to find one or else wait until his nap time or bedtime to poop. So we took them away altogether and within a day and a half, he pooped on the potty all by himself without telling anyone. It was totally amazing. But turning 4 is much older than 2 1/2... he was completely in control of his body and I think it was more of a power issue then one of fear.
anyway, Good luck!

My advice is to chill out. Kids will potty train when they are ready and not before. Trying to do so before then is a battle of wills and will only prolong the process.

She could save herself the power struggle and just wait till her daughter is READY. Like maybe another year? I don't know why so many parents push this. It should be the child's decision, not the parents' or anyone else's.
