Potty Training Equipment

Hi Mamas!
I have a small plastic potty that we have been potty training my 2.5 year old son on. At this point we aren't pushing anything. We just have the toilet out and he pees in it when we ask him if he needs to go. He has not told me he has to go nor has he gone #2 in the potty. Again, I'm not really pushing it but I also feel like maybe I need to be more consistent. Our one potty is downstairs in the kids bathroom. He likes to go whenever we change his diaper downstairs or before/after bath. We spend most of our time playing upstairs but I don't have a potty up there. I want to purchase another one for the upstairs bath so we can give him more opportunity to go all by himself. My question is should I buy another small plastic potty or should I get one of those contraptions that goes on the toilet? Also, should I get a portable toilet for when we are out and about? Any favorite brands?
Thanks!

What can I do next?

I can't say what you "should" get, but my son prefers the little insert that sits on the regular potty to his own little plastic potty. I think it makes him feel like a big boy, sitting on the potty like his parents. Every child is different. Good luck!

For upstairs, you can get one that has a seat that transfers to the big potty if he wants to use the big potty - one less thing to buy. I did get a portable toilet, it is really cool, uses ziplocs so that you can zip up the mess on the go. He has sat on it once, and we really haven't needed it, but I feel better when it is there, especially if all they have a porta potties where we go. Let me know if you need brands.

Let him lead you if he wants to go more. You can ask every 30 minutes, or go every 30 minutes, and he will let you know if you are pushing too much. I know that at daycare, they have my son go every 30 minutes or so, but at home, he has gone several hours without a problem.

Haha... I just had to laugh because I read a previous post and feel maybe it is a little misleading...

"At this young age, per their Fine-Motor skills... they CANNOT yet, pull down or pull-up their own pants.... or underwear or whatever. So you do have to help them. "

I agree they need some help with the potty, but my kids were both potty-trained before 2.5 and had NO problem pulling the pants and underwear up and down. We potty-trained my daughter at 23 months, and she was pro at that part from the very beginning.

Hope it wasn't inappropriate to comment on that, but I wasn't sure what it had to do with your question anyway and it was not an accurate statement.

I never used the small plastic pottys. I got a soft seat that sits on the big potty, and a step stool. Neither of my boys had a problem with this, and my oldest started using it at 18 months.

I have 2 potty chairs.... one for upstairs and one for downstairs. When my kids were potty training, I just put it nearby wherever they were. I also left them naked on the bottom.

Or, just leave them naked on the bottoms.

It takes time. Going poop in a 'toilet' takes time... it is often the latter part of potty mastery. Normal.

ALSO, what we have and MANY of my friends have, is a car potty. I got it from Amazon. If you input the search word "on the go potty" many will come up. This is a LIFEsaver... when on the road, stuck in traffic, at parks or anywhere where there is no toilet nor clean ones. We to this day, STILL use ours, ever since my Daughter was 2 years old. She is now 8 years old.
I STRONGLY suggest getting one. YES!

all the best,
Susan
