my 2 1/2 year old nephew has shown an interest in potty training. he has done well, but the bathroom itself has suffered. my sis has him sitting on a little potty and he is making a huge mess. does anyone have any tips for this? he is still to short to stand at the big potty. thank you- R.
we have always sat my son on the big toilet...and he's big enough that we sit him on it front-ways. if he's smaller you can sit him on it backwards...his little stuff will almost certainly hit the target, especially if he's backwards. good luck!

I havent potty trained a boy yet, but why not have him sit and try to do it? I mean at 2 1/2 they cant have very good aim. I can see how that would be a big mess. Anyways, keep us posted, Im sure potty training a boy would be very interesting. I still dont have my husband trained all they way! hahaha!

Is she having him stand and pee in the potty if so ya I can see how that is making a mess. Either have him sit on the potty to pee or get a foot stool and have him stand at the big potty to pee, or just have him sit on the big potty to pee he is still kinda young to be standing to pee.

My best advice is to go to the BabiesRUs web site and look up toilet seats. Find the Safety 1st Adapter Seat (it's $6.98) and BUY as many as toilets you have. These seats are the very BEST (and EXTREMELY easy to install)! They allow the toddler to use the toilet just like an adult w/o the fear of falling in and allows the adults to use the toilet without having to move toilet seats around. Potty chairs are a mess and I threw all mine out after 2 weeks...my kids weren't interested in sitting in a baby chair...they wanted the real thing.
I LOVE these seats because they are so easy to use and don't move around on the kiddos like the ones that you have to set on the toilet. Now if you are the kind of person that has the toilet rug over the outside of the toilet, you might have to take it off b/c with everything on it you may have problems keeping the lids up...but other than that I think they are the very best on the market and can't understand why they only get 2 stars.
As for sitting versus standing...I got my son to start sitting down. It wasn't until Daddy got home from deployment that we were able to master standing up...he needed some private coaching about needing to hold his wee and not just let it fly around trying to aim for the toilet...somehow getting these lectures from mom just weren't doing the trick...it's mano to mano in this line of work...so GET THE GUYS INVOLVED. If your little one can't handle not sprinkling while tinkling then get some handy wipes for him to clean up the toilet afterward or he needs to sit until he can learn not to go everywhere.
As for being too short, we just bought small step stools and they work on the toilet and then get transferred to the sink for washing hands afterwards. They're like $10 or less at any store.

I had my son sit on the potty to pee. It was just easier to do it this way. Then when he got older he started to stand without anyone telling him too.

My son uses a little potty seat too, and we have had to instruct him to "point the pee-pee down." He hasn't made a mess in quite some time. I hope that is helpful!

At one of the daycares I used to work at, we would sit the little boys backwards on the potty, facing the seat. Would you rather have a mess on the walls or on the toilet seat :) In one of the rooms we even had a seat that sits on the potty (smaller hole so they wont fall in) and it had a type of shield on it so that when the boys would sit to pee if it went up and out it would hit the shield and at least sprinkle downwards.

Have him lift the lid and then sit on the toilet backwards. Facing the toilet. This makes the pee head into the toilet rather than anywhere else. It's weird, but it works until they are tall enough. I told my son he was a cowboy riding a horse. He fell for it. And my floors were cleaner!

Get him a step stool to use at the toilet OR I would have my son stand on top of my feet???? His dad wasn't around and I had to teach him how to pee standing up somehow.

Hi R.,
My 2 1/2 year old is potty trained, but still not tall enough to stand by himself. We either let him sit, or he stands on our feet and this gives him enough of a boost to go without making a mess. Standing on our feet also cuts down on messes because he doesn't twist as much with us behind him and we can keep him focused on aiming. If he isn't focused, he starts looking around and the stream seems to follow his gaze (big mess!!) Hope this helps!

My great nephew is 3 now, he barely reached the big potty he is short for his age, you may want the big potty, but will have to help him if you don't want it everywhere until he gets the hang of holding himself for aim, My strategy for him was to see if he could hit the man in the hole. Weird but it works, he now says he goes by his self. Try an see if the assitance works till he gets the aim part down pat.

I had the same problem with my little boy. I tried the Cheerios in toilet, getting him to make bubbles, and rewards for going. Nothing seemed to work. As crazy as it may sound, I found that allowing my little boy to pee outside really worked. He felt as though he was getting away with something and the potty training became a breeze. Our "deal" was if I allowed him to pee outside he would #2 inside.

I use a little stool and he leans over to hold onto the seat. He still misses a lot, but it does help a bit. The potty chair was a disaster.
Now, if anyone has any ideas on how to get him to have a b.m. on the potty I would be much in your debt.

With both my boys, I used a short step stool and had them lean forward, supporting themselves by putting their hands on the top of the seat (which is flipped up). The stream goes straight into the toilet that way. The only thing is, you have to keep the seat clean because they're holding onto it!

Allow him to sit down. Standing will come with time and age.

I didn't read carefully through all of the comments, so I apologize if I repeat... but I have always heard the tip of sitting them backwards on the BIG toilet. I haven't tried it yet, but it won't be long... Good luck to your sis!
