Potty Training! - Vista, CA

Hi, Moms! I have a 2 yr old girl who is telling me (with words) that she wants to go on the potty like her big sis (3.5 yrs). 2 yr old is refusing to wear diapers (I, of course, could force her, but she is in pull-ups part time and panties the other) and REALLY wants to go on the potty. She is successful about half time and accidents the other half. Makes for a crazy day for Mommy. We are on day 5, and I am feeling a little stressed about sticking with it versus going back to diapers (which I don't want to do since she is so excited and eager). Any suggestions or advice on toilet training a JUST 2 yr old???

What can I do next?

My eldest daughter was potty trained at 22 months doing the EXACT same thing as yours, HATED the diaper, stripped herself naked at often as possible. We started putting the potty chair in the living room, where she spent most of her time, it was very visible, easy to remember to go, when it became regular we moved it to the bathroom. I know it may sound odd but it works! My youngest daughter, now 7 was potty trained at exactly 2 years. I also am a teacher of 2 1/2 year olds, getting your child potty trained is MUCH easier when THEY want to!!!

Hi J.,

Perhaps you've tried this but—
One thing I did with my 2.5 year old when she seemed ready was to watch the clock and put her on the potty every half hour or so. It's a lot of work but she got it after about a week (at least for number 1). When she did go successfully she would get a reward which was 1 M+M— a small treat but she was always enthusiastic. Perhaps this could lessen some of the accidents and you could give up pull ups during the day. Also, my 7 year old was great about encouraging her and I think that really helped. I know it's a little different with a 3.5 year old but I found that if you make it clear to the older sibling how much the little one is looking up to them, it helps.

Good Luck!

Do not go back to diapers. We have to stay constitant in everything we do no matter how hard or frustrating. I was told by another mom when i was potting traing (my oldest daughter) not to even use pull ups. They prolong the whole process. They need to feel wet and uncomfortable that way they will try to make it to the bathroom. They have a lot of crazy potty training ideas out there. I tired this one with my youngest who is now 8. Where they had the accident you take them back to that spot and then walk them to the bathroom (when walking them to the bathromm say things like hurry, hurry gota get to the bathroom)and then back to the spot do this a few times in a row every time they have an accident. Really not sure what worked but I did give up the pulls ups and all went fine. Just alot of sheets to wash for a awhile but no more money spent on diapers just laundry detergent. I have 3 girls and only used the pull-ups with the first one until I talked to that mom and never used them again. Stick with it mom. You'll be done with diapers befor you know it.:) No drinks before bed help too!

I have an 18 month old doing the exact same thing. We find her waking up from her naps with her diaper off. She'll poop in her diaper, take it off, THEN sit on the toilet (making a mess everywhere). She hates being wet or poopy and cries and cries. I am looking for the same advice. I do find that when I keep her naked from the waist down we have no accidents. She'll climb on the toilet by herself and go. Unfortunately, I have 3 other children and am constantly on the go and not able to stick around the house to work with her. Any tips?
