I am having a hard time getting my 4 year old to potty train. I finally have him in underwear, but when we run to the toilet he gets stage fright. If that wasn't enough he is holding his urine and his stools. HELP!!!!!!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hello wonderful mom's out there, i have great news!!!! He is peeing in the potty now!!! It him one full day of peeing on my wood floor, or my kitchen before he realized that it just wasn't okay. I had a small potty and the top comes off to put on the toilet and he loves it... I just finally said to him:" i'm sorry, but there just aren't anymore diapers and you have to wear your underwear." it worked- so for all the moms out there just stick to it and they just finally see is stinks to pee in your pants. Thank you to all of you with your wonderful advise. Oh yeah btw, i did print out a potty chart, do the stickers and he loves it.

Hi L.,
Man I so know what you are going through. My oldest son did that until I started making a game out of it. There are some toilet toys you can buy to help them become more relaxed and excited about going to the potty. It's worth a try. When my youngest son came along and he started acting like that, I was so glad my oldest had taught me what to do....hahahaha
Good Luck to you.
Peace & Blessings,
M.

We ran around and peed on trees, bushes, etc - in our yard, of course. My sister started it with him at her house - and accomplished in 3 days what I hadn't been able to do in six months - peeing on command.

L.,
I had a really hard time getting my 3 year old to potty train. He just wasn't interested, and a little lazy, so I decided to give him a little incentive with PeePee stickers and PooPoo toys. haha.. yeah, I went to the dollar store and bought a ton of toys and stickers. I told my little boy that he could have a sticker to place on the peepee chart, and a poopoo toy everytime he pooped. Let me tell you, that boy was in the bathroom 3 times a day trying to poop, and we had no problems with peein' either. It got to the point where I had to tell him he was only getting a toy for 1 bm a day. haha.. well, theres my strategy. Hope it works for you!

L., if it's any consolation, I have a 3 yr old that refuses to potty train. He just won't sit in any toilet. =[ I feel very frustrated but for now I'm just letting it go, until he's ready. Can't give you any advice since I'm in the same boat, but thought you might want to know that you're not alone! =]

hey L.,I could not help myself but smile while I was reading your massage,I have the same problem with #2 he just wont go in the potty and if you read all the books and stuff they tell you not to push them because it can tromitze them latter but what do you do.when my son was 2 he love to climb up on the pot and go poo all byhim self but now at 3 1/2 he wont he stands in the coner and says he is hiding so what I do is take his underroos off and carry him to the pot and sit with him some time it works sometimes it dosent I have even tryed giving him his favorite book or toy while he is sitting there. as far as peeing goes when he was younger we would let him run around nicked in the back yard and make a game of going when he would start to go I would tell him to go and water the plants just so he would get the just of going in one spot. and when it was cold or raing inside we had an extera small trash can at hand and let him go in that now he loves to go in the potty and of course he still loves to water the plants out side just make sure that it's not your fave plant I have lost a few. oh ya and peeing in the bathtub worked too. good luck and if you have any advice on #2 please shere I just don't know what to do about that. Hi I am a sahm of 3 beautiful children. My son was my easiest to potty train. It sounds a little goofy but I trained him to sit backwards on the toilet rather than the front way so 1 he had no fear of falling in and 2 his pee pee stayed in the toilet because at that age they dont really know how to control the aim. I let him also have a book with him while he was on the toilet it helped and if he didnt pee but i knew he had to I would let the water run. it helped him go sometimes. Hope this helps

I had the same problem with my daughter, and it was very hard. I know how stressful this is for you! Make sure that there's nothing medical going on; that's the first step at this point. Ask your pediatrician what s/he thinks, and if you need a urologist to do an exam, then do that. There was nothing wrong with my daughter, but knowing that let us move forward with no worries.

What eventually worked for us was a very matter-of-fact approach. She was starting preschool, and I would take her to the potty when we got to school, saying "Ladybugs [that was her class name] go the potty before and after school." She would hold it all day at first, but it eventually became less fraught with tension for me and for her. Best of luck to you!

I am in the same boat with my four year old! He is using the potty to pee, but won't poop in it. I've got several potty training dvds (including Potty Power) which he likes, but it is still slow going. Anyway, I'm just glad I'm not the only one in this situation! :-) And I'm especially glad that all the other moms who posted have been so understanding. My mom makes me feel bad about not having him fully potty trained yet.

hi L.,
i have a 3 1/2 yr old daughter. she is fully potty trained. what really worked for her, was a reward system of stickers. she got to pick one out everytime she 'went' on the potty and she ended up putting them all over a mirror in her bedroom. to this day, she is still very proud of it! my cousin had trouble with her son holding it in and her doctor recommended she sit him on the potty for 5-10 mins after every meal until he finally started going. good luck, hope i helped ya a little!
