My son will be 3 in March. He knows when he has to use the bathroom, because when he is naked he will use it everytime, but if I put a pullup or diaper on him he refuses to go to the potty and tells me that he went pee or poop and needs to be changed after he already went in his pants, what do I do? He cant stay naked all the time lol

What can I do next?

Put him on underwear all the time. When he is in a diaper or a pull-up it is sending him the message that it is o.k. to go in them. Take him to the bathroom often and reward him when goes potty, clap and make a big deal out of it. When my daughter was potty training a would make up songs. Let him use it before going to bed and take him in the middle of the night to prevent wetting the bed.

Have you tried underwear instead of a diaper? That way he will get wet if he goes and perhaps it will have the same effect as being naked.

put him in regular underwear when you're going to be home all weekend. If he goes in his pant have him change his underwear and if he pees in the floor have him help clean it up. When you put him in a diaper or pullup he knows it's safe to go.

Sounds like its time for all underwear all the time. He will quickly pick it up...have some faith and just go for it....be prepared for a couple weeks of changing him but it shouldn't take much longer than that...and I always changed my kids as soon as they had an accident, I don't think they need to sit in it for a couple minutes, they are aware of it as soon as it happens in underwear.

Good Luck!

Underwear. It took a lot of wet pants and laundry with my son, but taking away the pullups all together was the only way. In a couple of days he was using the potty pretty much all the time, with a few accidents randomly. If he has the control when he's naked, he'll learn the control in underwear when he feels that he's all wet pretty quickly. Good luck!!!!

Have you tried just putting him in regular underwear? And then, if he goes, let him sit in it for a while (not too long - 10-15 minutes) so that he gets to feel how uncomfortable it is. Pullups and diapers are designed to pull the dampness away from the skin, but underwear won't do that. Good luck.

My son is almost 2 1/2 & was potty trained in one month & I have the luxury of staying at home alot. Here's what worked for us: At first I let him run around naked, every time he used the potty, I bribed him with his favorite treat & we made a BIG deal of the deed! We clapped & hooted & hollered EVERY time he went & gave lots of praise. He also enjoyed empting his own DEED into the toilet himself out of the little potty. Step 2, I put real underwear on him, no pants, no shoes. Once he peed & pooped in those a couple of times, he caught on real fast that he did not like it! We stayed on this step for a good while. Step 3: Once they get #2 down we started putting on pull-ups for travel ONLY. I found that he would pee or poop in his diaper EVERY time we left the house b/c he was used to it & it was convenient for him. Once I started putting on pull ups with his favorite character on it, he started asking to go to the bathroom even in public. I simply told him when I was putting them on, "We don't want to pee on Diego" & showed him all the pictures on the pull ups. I also had to prompt him before every trip, "We don't want to pee in our car seat" & "Don't forget you don't have on a diaper, you have to use the potty when you need to go". This worked like a charm for us. GOOD LUCK! BTW- They are all different & learn at different rates. One thing I found with mine was, it did not happen until HE was ready.

As everyone is suggesting, underwear will do the trick. I went through the same thing, and I was amazed that my daughter could tell when she was wearing a diaper or pullup. Your son knows that it is okay to go in the diaper and/or pullup. Go get some training underwear and get rid of the pullups and/or diapers. The training underwear are a must because they have more layers and when he goes in them, it contains the mess. It will not happen automatically and you have to remain calm - but it will be worth it! Good luck!
