i'ts hard to train a boy when a man is not around, i am a mother of 5, almost all teenagers now, my poor son, he is the only one out of the 5 the rest r girls. anyway, i started him by setting him on the pottie first like a girl and just watched him and as he gradually understood the concept of using the toilet i taught him how to stand at the appropriate time and sit at the right time. i'ts hard as a woman to teach a boy but just hang in there it can be done.also, if you have a male family member that u can trust like your brother uncle or whoever you can have them help by showing them what to do. hope that helps. good luck...L.

Hi S.,

I have 2 boys and know too well about potty training. For both of my boys it was pretty much cold turkey. My first cried for 24 hours streight because he didnt like the feel of underwear. And the second was easier because he wanted to be like his brother. They rarely had an accident. Honestly I think its harder to train them to keep their pee stream in the toilet then to go potty when needed.

I only have a daughter but on of my friends had a son. She would put a step stool in front of the toilet and throw in cherrios and tell him to sink them. Making it like a game really worked for her.

boys usually aren't ready until a little closer to 3. also, wait til he's able to communicate pretty well, as you know, that takes a little longer with boys than girls.

I'm a BIG believer that if you wait until they're really ready, then the whole potty training experience will go much smoother and way faster! As much as I hated it, my son didn't get potty trained until he was 3 but when we started, it only took about 1-2 weeks and then one month later, he was even dry at night. My friend's son was the same age as mine (2 weeks difference) and she started training him at age 2 - he STILL wasn't fully trained until he was almost 4! That's way too many wet/ dirty underpants for me! Between 2& 3, I did put him on the potty but he just never really showed an interest so I didn't push it. Once we decided it was time, we went straight to underwear - no pull-ups and we were consistent. Like I said, it only took about 1-2 weeks! Good luck!!

I have one son and two daughters. I didn't start training them until they were 3. My youngest daughter trained with my son, because she wanted to be like brother. She was about 18 months old.

He will let you know when he is ready. When he is dry for a long time, taking his diaper off or trying to talk to you about the potty. You could get a book for him about going potty. My favorite is "The Potty Book for Boys". I found it at Waldenbooks. They make one for girls too.

I didn't think training one gender to use the toilet was any more difficult than the other. What I was most concerned about was whether or not it was alright for him to sit to pee. I found out it was and so that is what he did until he was 5, I think. I waited until he was tall enough to do it on his own. I think waiting gave him some extra time to learn the difference between the sensations.

I am married. My husband knew I could take care of it, so we talked about training. However, it was something I did and kept him updated on.

I think my comment is just like most of the rests. My nephew wanted to biga big boy like daddy he was 2 1/2 So like others have said I put cheerios and told him to sink them with in a week and a half he was peeing in the potty but the poop was a lil diff I had accidents and stuff but once, I told him if you get a feeling like you have to go pee but it is from behind than tell me and he did even then he had to have cheerios so we had the "ship" as wecalled it sink them..He would tellme the shipis comin I thought it was cute but it took no time at all sogood luck my lil boy is only 5 monthsso I have ways to go..Good Luck on this expidetion.
