Does anybody have any advice on how to get a very stubborn 3 year old girl to use the potty? I've tried the rewards thing and she doesn't even mind the wet pants feeling. She also watches this potty training video, sings the songs,& is very into it. She just refuses to go. I'm always thinking to myself "if you can work the dvd player & help me cook (and alot more, she's pretty darn smart) then you can use the toilet". She has a little sister, and I'm thinking this might be the reason. But she gets along very well with her and is almost kind of motherly towards her. She doesn't act jealous at all. I really don't think it's an attention thing. I think I should also mention that I don't like fly mad about it or anything. I just need some advice or ideas on how to be more encouraging. For a week straight of not wearing diapers (except for bed), she used the potty one time. Wanted to add that for that week of no diapers, I didn't do pull ups either. Just the cloth training pants. So the wet feeling really doesn't bother her. Oh yeah, I should mention that one of those evenings of training I had to work (only 3 hours) and my husband "forgot" to take her to the bathroom every so often or even check to see if she went in her pants. Anyways she was absolutely soaked when I got home. She seriously did not care. I mean come on, that's gross. What a weirdo.

What can I do next?

Hi,
I have the same problem at home too. My girl will soon be 3yrs in April and she has refused to use her potty. But she will tell me when she goes. I don't know what to do too. Her younger sister(20months) goes sometimes but she will not.
I am also looking for suggestions from other mums.

This may sound horrible to you, but I have heard about parents that put underwear on children and put plastic pants over them. One time of wetting themselves usually will take care of it happening again. It is very difficult to do this when we all have carpets, etc. I have heard that it is very successful. My daughter would do extremely well at home but when daycare would put a pullup on her she decided that she would rather keep playing versus going to the potty. It took the teacher telling her that she would buy her a package of "big girl panties" after a week of no wet pullup before she would take the time at school to use the restroom.

Good luck,

S.

Have you tried letting her go naked? I know you will have to clean up some messes, but this is what ultimately trained my oldest daughter. I picked a day when I knew we could stay home. I let her stay naked and yes, she peed on the floor a few times. But she didn't like the feeling of her urine running down her legs. And then finally when she had to 'go' she ran to the toilet. So then we all made the huge "what a big girl!" fuss, and let her wear her pretty new Princess Panties. I know its not exactly conventional, but it worked for us!

Try making it a game. When you have to go potty, pretend you have to go really bad and do the pee pee dance this will make her laugh and possibly she'll play along with you. Both of you run to the bathroom and see who can sit down first and go first, who ever wins gets a prize. Well mom, I know what you might want, a massage, pedicure a date with your husband, etc. Just be creative and prepared for a surprise from her, but you better have the prizes ready!!

This worked for my last one. We would laugh alot and we would sit on the toilet alot together. See if it works for her.

Good Luck

Hi~

I am potty training now also. My success at first I let her just run naked for about a month. I kept asking her do you a have to potty about every 1/2 hour. I also offered up gifts and candy. After 1 week of solid potty going I threw on panties. You are going to have many accidents. But when my little one goes I sorta have a potty parade party. Like she did the most awesome thing. Don't scold her I did that once or twice I think just out of being tired. I read never do that. I also throw at her that we can't go to school or go to dance classes with a diaper.. It's working... I only put on diaper or pull up at night. Good Luck!

I have 4 children. Now they are Girl-20, Boy-19, Girl-15, and Girl-14. Something different worked on each one of them. I never used pull ups. I used the cotton training pants and put the plastic training pants on over them for all of the kids. And a colorful potty chair.

Girl-20: I made up a sticker board and hung it on the wall so she could reach it and for every time she went pee in the potty she got 1 sticker, #2 earned her 2 stickers. And at the end of the day I would have a surprise waiting for her. Usually her favorite cookies, Ice cream bar etc. She looked forward to doing a good job pottying so she could find out what her surprise was at the end of the day.

Boy-18: When I went through potty training my son, I had dad take him to the bathroom when he went. There's just certain things moms can't show their little boys. And the proper way too pee is one of them..LOL...Next thing you know he is peeing & pooping in his potty chair and saying look mommy I can potty just like daddy.

Hope these work for someone.
