Sounds like he needs more time. Do not put the potty away. You can
continue to talk about it, but do not turn it into a batttle. Not worth it.

20 months is awfully early. You could show him how his stuffed bear likes to sit on the potty or start with some potty-training stories, but I wouldn't press the issue. It's more likely to backfire than to help at this early age.

Hazel's website recommendation is a good one. Here's another that many parents find helpful. It gives a few variations on"readiness" checklists, plus tips on various training strategies, the best ages to start them, and the advantages and disadvantages of each approach: http://www.parentingscience.com/toilet-training-readiness...

Some people are successful at that age. I didn't even think about trying until my son was 3 1/2. He trained in 3 days.

You are asking about readiness, which is the logical first place to start.

Here is a link to a great article from Penn State. This was written for Early Childhood Ed students to help them both identify children who were ready to begin toileting, and to support their parents.

Scroll down a little way and you'll find a "Signs of Readiness" checklist for three realms: physical, mental&language, and emotional readiness. Children need to be ready in all three realms before we begin, or we run the risk of setbacks that can last for a very long time.

I use this method myself, not just as a nanny and preschool teacher but also as a mom. We waited until our son was really ready-- he was a bit older than three-- and we've been consistentlly successful with relatively few accidents. It was just a few days before he 'had it down'. He still needs reminding from time to time (and then Tell them to go, do not ask "do you have to..."- they'll usually say no and then have an accident.) .

Good luck and let your son lead, when he's ready!:)

I would save yourself and him the frustration...sounds like he's not ready. He is pretty young, especially for a boy.

Sounds like he's not ready. My experience was that when I was ready but my son wasn't, it was hellacious and no fun. When HE was ready, it was a piece of cake. He was about 3 1/2. My pediatrician made it clear to me; he said "do you want potty training to be a nightmare for both of you? Then why push him?"

Our son is almost two and here's what we're doing: We've purchased a little potty for him and have it on the floor in the bathroom. Right now we're just teaching him what it is and that he's supposed to sit on it. We're also letting him watch us go in the big potty so he knows what to do by example. When he is making a poopy, we ask "Do you have a poopy? Do you need to go sit on the potty?" The point is to make him connect the two, but so far he hasn't. We're hoping that when he is making a poopy he will ask to go sit on the potty or just say "potty". It's way too early for him to actually do anything in the potty.

My daughter and many of her classmates started around this age if they showed signs of readiness. The first thing to do is let him pack the diapers away with you. The. He's in training underwear and helps clean up any messes. It's a little bit of a commitment but the nAtural consequences of not going in the potty usually work to instill a sense of responsibility in the child. For my daughter she figured it out when we had to leave the park after she pooped in her underwear. We eventually added a treat bag for motivation but never punishments for mistakes. Good luck!

No..he's not ready. My son was almost 4 before he was ready! Since 2 he knew when he had to go..but just was ready emotionally. I spent a lot of time working with him. Wish I had just relaxed and waited! Good Luck!
