My son is going to be 2 1/2 at the end of the month. I have worked with him for a while on the whole potty thing. He got sick and was teething and so i stopped due to lose stool. But my question is...
He WILL use the potty #1 and has done #2 once as long as his diaper is off. He will go everytime #1 in the potty if his diaper is off. But as soon as i put big boy underware or shorts or something on he wont do it!!!!
Any suggestions on how to get him to understand that underware is NOT a diaper!
Thanks in advance!!!!

So What Happened?

Well not much has changed. I have found that i can leave him with boxers and/or his soft pants with nothing on and he does great! He went poop about 3 times in the potty and then it was like all of a sudden he was scared to go on the potty. He will dance around and try to distract himself and acts real nervous. I have tried setting him on the potty and sitting with him and he just trys to get up and i dont want him to be afraid so i eventually get up and put his pull up on and let him go poop in it. I feel like i am giving in but i dont want him to have an upset stomach or poop on my floor. But even when his pull up is on his does the same thing. Its almost like he is affriad to poop anymore. ANYWHERE! But i think its because he knows now that he should go in the potty but he is scared to. So we are still working on it!!!!

M., try having him go bare-bottom for a day if possible. My son did the same thing-thought his underwear was a really cool diaper. So, I took it off and showed him where to go to the potty when he had to go. Sure enough, he began using the potty (for #1) and I think I put underwear on him on day 2 of training. No accidents!! Good luck.

Stop using diapers, like, yesterday!!! He'll have a few accidents in his underwear, you can use vinyl covers if you want. But they know exactly what they are doing. No diaper? Go in the potty. Diaper? Go in there.
The number 1 rule of potty training is as soon as they only have an accident or so a day, go to underwear and don't go back - even for illness and teething, it just confuses them.
Every 15 minutes take him and have him sit on the potty. My son was trained at 2.5 as well, it's SOOO nice to not deal with diapers!

M.,
i can relate 100 percent! you are already ahead of the game becaue for being only 2.5 and in the process of mastering the potty! Congrats! my son was not ready until he was 3.5. he started the same way great when bare bottom but would have an accident in any type of pants. what i did was took my son and had him "throw away his diapers" from then on we were diaper free. it sounds silly but something about them pysically throwing away their diaper and wearing underwear made it all click. we still have trouble with #2 and if we are home and i know he has to go i will let him go bare bottom because i know he will run when its time. good luck in your potty training journey!

I had some problems getting my now 4 year old son to potty train. I finally used the 3 day potty training method and that worked for us. I would put him in his underpants. And keep reminding him up to 100 times a day (let mommy know if you have to go potty okay.) He will stop answering you but will still hear your message. Then if he starts to go potty in his big boy underpants. Whisk him to the potty and pull down his pants. Then say pee-pee and poopy goes on the potty. If he manages to finish on the potty give a reward. If not that time say good try you'll get it next time for sure. I promise he'll get it in a very short amount of time. My son went from kicking the potty (literally not joking) to being completely potty trained in two days. Good Luck.

My son always peed in the pull-up. He needed to feel and know that he would leak everywhere if he peed. I know you said shorts BUT Have you tried boxers? I bought my son size 4 boxers and I left off pants when we were at home. My son usually wears 3T, but the 4T fit only a little big. I got them at TARGET. I routinely brought him to the potty and since boxers are looser than underwear he can't really have his potty being held in the underwear, so it encouraged him to go on his own. Also to encourage using the potty, I wrapped up old matchbox cars and he got to open up these "presents" each time he went potty on his own. It took about a month before I didn't have to remind him to go. He still wears a pull up at night, but he wears underwear/boxers all day and at nap. Also, if your are set on potty training him, DONT return to diapers in the day. It may take a couple times to wet himself before he gets it. Don't make a big deal when he wets. Have him help you clean it up and put it in the washer and just put on a new pair. But DO make a HUGE deal of when he goes in the potty. So my advise, don't switch back and forth from pull-ups to underwear/boxers. This is a time consuming process, but don't be discouraged he'll get there. M.

Our son was well past 3 when he finally potty-trained. He would stay dry in his diaper, but the minute we put underwear on, he'd wet them.

Our pediatrician said that boys often don't have the sensation of a full bladder and the recognition of it until later in their development. His advice: continue to work on it, but don't get too concerned if it's not clicking as quickly as we'd like it to.

When the light bulb finally went off, it went off. Be as patient as possible, he may just not be physically ready yet.

Good luck!

M., i have no advice as i'm in virtually the same boat as you. so i'm kind of glomming onto your request. please forgive.

my son, who'll be 2.5 at the end of the year, can keep his 'car panties' (pull ups w/lightening mcqueen on them) dry all day long (even occasionally pooping in the potty), but as soon as you put underwear on him, he pees/poops every five minutes, so we put him back in the pull ups. (the reason we got them in the first place is b/c he wanted to wear his underwear right before we were going on a driving vaca w/over 18 hours in the car both ways - all my friends told me to avoid them).

anyway, what i don't understand is that he's obviously capable of holding it, so how could he not be physically ready? any thoughts, ladies? i do like the idea of the boxers if i could find any in his size.
