Potty Training 28 Month Old Boy.

So, my oldest is now 5, and he potty trained when he was about 2 months shy of his 4th birthday. (Yes, I should have done it sooner, but that's water under the bridge.) We had 2 days of lots of accidents, the 3rd day was good and days 4 and 5 were practically a breeze.

Well, my 2 year old decided yesterday to take off his diaper and pee in the toilet (which he is barely tall enough to do). My husband and I said, "Oh how cute!. Yeah, what a big boy!" He did it again today.

So, for those of you who successfully trained a child that young, what pearls of wisdom can you throw my way? I really want to take advantage of his interest.

Be consistent. Don't fall back on diapers when you go out. Put a small plastic potty in the back of your car and use that if he needs to go while you're out (and can't get to a toilet). Don't buy pullups. Lots and lots of praise, and no negative attention or punishment if he has an accident. Just clean it up and move on. For the first few weeks, have him try to go to the potty every 30 minutes or an hour. Don't just ask if he needs to go because he probably will say he doesn't have to. Actually walk him to the bathroom and have him try.

Good luck - when the time is right, it's right.

We've trained our 2.5 yo, definitely at his insistence. Our oldest was 3.5 as well when fully trained, mostly because he regressed when younger sib was born.

We began at age 2 with the "weekend potty training" method. 3 days of wearing nothing but a shirt, drinking lots of juice, eating popsicles, apple sauce, lots of fruit, etc, and crackers to make him thirsty and drink more. We set the timer for every 10 minutes, then increased as we went along. We did the no pants method for a few months, then went to pants but no underwear for a few months. We found that underwear and pullups are too close to diapers this age, so we only used diapers when traveling or night/nap. At home he was only using the potty unless we forgot to take off his diaper.

Now at 2 years 7 months he is fully potty trained, even using the potty everywhere we go, so we only use diapers at night. So I noticed that it took several more months for him to make the connection than for my oldest, since he is so young. However, it saved us a lot in diapers to have him using the potty at home. I'm not sure this method would work if you have him in daycare or preschool though, or if you travel much. We pretty much camped out at home, near the potty, for several months. It's been nice to have more freedom in the last few weeks LOL!

My son starting using the potty just after he turned 2.

Elmo's Potty Time video is really cute.

Get him some big boy undies (i like the Gerber training pants because they're nice and soft and catch very small dribbles, but are really just underwear).

Stay away from pull ups and diapers unless you want him to USE them.

Don't worry about night training... it's not physically trainable until he does it on his own.

Keep the potty near you so he can always get to it.

Stay positive and congratulate your big boy!

Children can be trained at 2. Actually that is when they should be trained, however the "wick away" diapers and pullups have made the concept less inviting to the toddler who experiences no discomfort from wet pants.

Go with it.... if he is doin this, this is your window of opportunity.
And if you want a stimulus package to encourage you? think of the money you'll save when you aren't purchasing 2 more years worth of diapers.

Oh, how cute! He could be one of the early ones! Be aware that poop training is often a much later step for some kiddos, and that night dryness arrives on its own schedule.

My son was completely potty trained when he was 22 months old. One day he decided he wanted to go potty, so I went for it. I put him in underwear and explained he needed to only go in the potty. He only had a couple of accidents and was completely trained in 2 days. As a daycare provider I have found it to be much easier to potty train a young 2 year old over an older child.
