Potty Training - Batavia,IL

I have just started potty training my son who will be 3 in Sept. He will go to the bathroom on his own when he has nothing on. However, when I put pulls ups, diapers or even regular underwear on him he just goes to the bathroom in them. Anyone have any suggestions for getting him to go to the bathroom once he has cloths on? Should I just let him wear underwear and make him change himself when he does go to the bathroom in them? He is my first child so any help would be great.

Thanks,
K.

I would say don't worry too much. He will get it when he is ready. I wouldn't make him clean up after himself. I always help my kids with that stuff. I would talk to him about it. If you go pee pee in your underwear this will happen. What do you want to wear? Eventually, my son got it after some accidents and was OK. If he said he didn't want to wear them though, I would give him a break until he was ready. I also didn't need to rush it.

My son has been potty trained since he was about 30 months and one thing we tried that I think helped a lot was a sticker chart, where for everyday that he kept his undies dry, he got a sticker, and when he got ten stickers he got a toy. He loved this. It definitely takes time though and they will learn at their own pace so hang in there and good luck!

My oldest just turned 2yrs old when I started potty training her, it only took me 2months & she never had an accident after that. At first I would make her sit on the lil' potty until she would go, then after she finished I would do a pee pee dance then give her an ice cream cone, it worked & it worked fast. The reason why I it happened so quickly is because my second child was on her way, I just couldnt afford 2 kids in papers.
good luck try to make it fun for your child.

The only experience I have with potty training is through my 3 year old nephew. My sister tried every trick - underwear under the diaper, pull ups, m&m rewards, etc. The only thing that worked was letting him have a couple accidents in his clothes. He wet himself 3 times in 1 day, and only had a couple accidents after that. I guess since it's summer, it'd be a good time to try that anyway -- stay outside so if he does have an accident it's easier to clean! Good luck!

I would ask him "Are you pants dry?" And when his pants are dry I would give him a sticker. This I would do every 15 minutes at first and then up the minutes until it just sort of exstinquishes on it's own. Then I would have him sit on the potty as well. You may want to do this in intervals but you'll have to see what will work for him. Some kids can be put on every 15 minutes others grow weary of this quickly and then start refusing to sit so you'll have to figure that out. And if he says he doesn't want to I wouldn't push. That will definitely back fire. Then when he does sit on the potty I would verbally praise him. And if he goes number 1 or 2 I would have a surprise basket with little trinkets (i.e. match box cars) that you can give him as a reward. Hope this is helpful. Training 4 kids I've done a lot of things wrong and these things worked the best after a lot of trial and error.
