I have a 3 year old boy that cries every time he is on the potty chair. He has never had an accident with using the potty chair so I'm not to sure why he is so scared of using it. He has done both number one and two in the potty chair but he had screamed while he did it. Please could someone give me some help!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

First,I would like to thank everyone that had gave me great ideas. Second, my son is completely potty trained, he no longer cries when he sits on the potty chair. It took a week and a half, but we had accomplished the potty training!!

M....I have the greatest thing for you. I have 2 boys ages 9 and 6 and they both did this and both of them where very hard to potty train. And my 9 year old was even almost 4 when he finally got fully potty trained! What I had to finally do was get a "treasure chest" and fill it with very little treats and some small toys from like the dollar store. And everytime they went on the potty they got to pick just one thing out of it. This started to work and they stopped crying everytime they where on the potty! And within I would say a month or so we no longer had diapers or pullups. And then I still used the chest for good behavior. Good Luck to you.

When he's ready to go, he'll go. I've potty trained 3 boys. Forcing them only escalates their fears. It's a control issue. Parents control almost every aspect of little one's lives. They can control this and sometimes you for that matter. Trust me, keep trying but don't force it. He WILL be potty trained before you know it.

Hi M.,

It sounds like he is just scared. Even though it seems like a cinch to us, this is a huge life change for them. My 3 year-old son will pee on the potty, but seems terrified to poop on it. He did a couple of times when I first started training him, but he told me it hurt so after that, he was done. Now, he pees on the potty, and poops in a pull-up. It is very frustrating, but I am just sitting back and letting him do it on his own time. My daughter was the same way, it took her an additional six months to go # 2 on the potty. She offered no other reason, but that it was scary. My only suggestion is to get some books and/or DVD's that you can watch, take a laid back approach and eventually he'll get it.

M., if you are staying in the room with him while he is on the potty chair, leave the room and stand behind the almost closed door and see if that helps. I did that with my youngest child, who is 42 now, and it worked. She didn't want anyone in the room with her when was on the potty. I hope this works.

does he complain that it hurts when he pees. I would see if he has an urinary tract infection or even a hernia. I would contact your doctor and if he/she does not know tell him to send you to a urologist.
