Potty Setback After Travel?

Hi Moms - just got back from a 6 day trip to PA. We flew round trip and he did fine. He's 3.5 years old and has been trained for 6months,both poop and pee. He has night-time pee accidents. But yesterday and today, in the early evening, he's had a couple of accidents - Poop & peeing in pants - he's been distracted by play both times. He hasn't had this problem in a LONG time. I was wondering, is it normal to have minor setbacks like this after a big routine break? Thanks!

What can I do next?

Yes set backs like this are common. My daughter is 4, she's been trained for about a year and just this week has had issues.

If it continues for a few days you might what to have him checked out to make sure he doesn't have a bladder infection or something like that.

Any major change can throw a child off-stride for awhile. And trained kids can have their ups and downs even without a particular disturbance. According to an article on Toilet Learning (http://betterkidcare.psu.edu/AngelUnits/OneHour/ToiletLea..., "When young children are playing, they can forget the physical signals that they need to use the bathroom. Also, children might be interested in using the toilet one day, and not the next. Many children will insist on wearing diapers and refuse any suggestion of using the toilet. Setbacks like these are normal…."

Things will probably get back on track pretty soon. You might be able to encourage his "remembering" with a sticker chart. I'd give lots of stickers the first few days (perhaps one for every dry hour to get him connected to the chart), then gradually reduce stickers as he achieves more consistent success. There might be a special reward when you're ready to retire the chart.

How old is he? Did you drive or fly? I don't really know what to tellyou except keep on him and don't give up. How long has he been potty trained? If you drove did you have a pull up on him or did you stop for potty breaks? Its a long drive I know I am from pa and drove to san antonio and back when my daughter was 8 mos old.
