My husband and I are starting our search for the right potty for our son. Yes I know I'm starting earily, but I'm trying to do my homework and be prepared. So my question is does anyone have any suggestions on which potty chairs are best and why? Looking for some expierenced moms help here as I'm a first timer and dont want to go thru more than one of these things. Thanks for the help.

What can I do next?

We are starting to toliet train are 20month old also. We bought a Graco one from babies'rus it is a stand alone one and the ring/seat can be used on the big toilet as well. The ring/seat is bigger than most potty chairs. We first had bought a similiar one but the ring/seat was way to small for our bigger than average son. The cons are just like all the other stand alone potty chairs.

I hope you find what you are looking for and 17 months is not to soon to start potty training.

There are essentially two ways to go:

Stand along potty chair
Pros: kid-sized so they are not intimidating, allows kids' feet to be flat on floor (important, especially for pooping),
Cons: have to clean them each time, bulky so they add more clutter to the bathroom

Ring inserts
Pros: cheap, can have them in each bathroom, gets kids used to being on the "real" toilet so when they're not at home it's less of a disconnect, come in more decorative themes (adds an incentive)
Cons: doesn't work well for smaller children, probably still need a stepstool

We actually started with the stand-alone chair, which I suppose was good for getting my son interested. However, he was a big boy, so by the time he was serious about training, he was already too big for it (didn't fit well over the bowl, and that was without the little pee gaurd!). He actually only peed in it a couple times, and never pooped. We bought those rings instead, and he took to them immediately. We already had stepstools in each bathroom for handwashing/toothbrushing, so it was no problem to slide that over to the toilet. The rings were easy to clean, inconspicuous, and easy to take on vacations or to others' houses.

So, I'd say maybe buy one of each? There's a certain novelty to having the actual chair in the bathroom in terms of getting kids interested. In terms of which chair to buy, we bought a no-frills one (no sounds, etc.), I think from Safety First of something like that, that had a pull-out bowl.

Good luck!

what I would suggest...is a little stool for him to step up on...and then the kiddie insert toilet seat for your normal toilet. why you ask? are ya sick of diapers yet? do you want to add another yet of emptying that same stuff from a bowl? or do you just want to be done with the poop???? LOL

Try the Dr. Merry's Potty Pal and training system. It's an all-in-one pottyseat, so there's no need to hunt down the toddler seat, or needing to find a place to store it. There's also no dumping like you have to do with a traditional stand-alone toddler potty. The Child's seat is hidden inside the lid when not in use as is the adult seat which sits under the toddler seat.

I like it because its easy for the kids to use, and they feel like "big" people using it. And it cuts down on clutter in the bathroom and is easy to keep clean.

Target online (not in stores) also sells something called a Potty Pal. Its a toilet set with a built in piece that is a child size toilet seat. So it has 3 pieces (lid, regular seat and an additional flip up piece )to the assembly, rather than 2 like a standard one does.

Just nice becasue the ring piece doesn't need to be removed or added each time the child uses the bathroom..they can easily operate it and its not obvious (like a padded ring or whatever)and you don't have to figure out where to put it when adults use the bathroom..it just flips up with the toilet lid. It comes in a round or oval bowl I believe for about $25. Then just use a good step stool...big enough for them to manueuver on and turn around on if needed (enough surface space).

Good luck!
