My son is going to be 2 in aug, he is 42lbs and has always been in the 95th percent for his size. We are looking to potty train this week. He is too big for pull ups, so the diapers he has now with work fine. The problem I am having is finding a big enough seat for the toilet to potty train on. None of the other potty seats will work and are designed for children 30-40lbs or smaller. Any sugestions on where I could shop for a potty seat big enough for a 42lb child? Really hoping to find something for over the toilet with a pee gard for boys.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the good advice. Today in the public restroom he went on there toilet, the differnce between that seat and mine is the gap in the front of the lid. So we are getting a differnt toilet seat lid. Thanks so much, you moms are great! I can always count on you to help me out, THANKS THANKS THANKS!

not sure about a seat there, but I wanted to suggest have him sit backwards on the regular toilet seat (facing the tank) and put a cheerio in the water and "teach" him to hit the cheerio :) it's a fun way to teach him how to use the potty as well as cuts down on the mess it might make while learning....

good luck with which ever way you decide to go! :)

Hi T., here's what I did. I never used a potty seat. My son hopped on there backwards! Peeing backwards we never needed a pee guard. That's how a lot of preschools also teach kids. Now he just turned 3 and can stand up to pee. My son never used pull-ups either. Good luck!

At toys R us they sell a guard tht goes onto your regular potty seat for boys learning. Also for larger sized pull-ups try looking in the good nites.

I don't have specifics, but here's a thought. There are lots of special needs children who aren't ready to toilet train until they are older, and therefore bigger, people. Surely there are resources if you search online. Maybe a medical supply company might have something that would work for you. Good luck!

It is possible to train him directly on the regular toilet. If he is that big he can just straddle it backwards (or forwards) My friend's daughter is tiny and that is how they taught her to use the potty by the time she was 2. My son is 2 and very tall but only 33 lbs and we are using the baby bjorn potty seat (adjusts to fit the potty). It fits him pretty good although he hates sitting on it but we try every now and then. Good luck.

I would just train him directly on the regular toilet seat. Trust me, in the long run, it can be much easier that way. With my oldest, he became attached to the potty seat, and I ended up having to carry it everywhere, or he wouldn't go potty. My other two were fine with either seat. Good luck either way.
