Potty Help Please! - Charlotte,NC

My son is 31 months old and we are trying to potty train. He's not telling us when he has to go (not sure if he's put two and two together yet), but if we sit him on the potty he will pee. My question is actually two-part: When we sit him down on the potty, he forces himself to pee. He grunts hard like he's trying to poop, but just a small trickle of pee comes out. We're certainly not forcing him to sit on the potty. We just tell him it's time to try and that's what happens. Can he hurt himself by using so much force? My next issue is pretty common: he won't poop on the potty. He screams and fights it and runs off to poop somewhere else. Does anyone have any tricks to making this easier for him? He's not constipated and doesn't act as if it hurts him to go. Not sure where to go from here. Thanks ladies!

We tried for 2 years to get our 4 year old to potty train. The poops were the hardest. He is just now understanding the concept of it. HE would go and hide too. We found bragging on him and just talking to him about it seemed to get his interest. It will come when he is ready. Try little treats like lolli-pops etc..

Good Luck

OK, this is going to sound crazy, but it worked for me. Sit him on the potty when you know that he has to pee and tickle his belly. When he starts to laugh, he will pee in the potty. As for the pooping in the potty, for some reason it is harder for boys to get used to that. My son was almost 4 before he would poop in the potty. I had to give him Miralax because he would hold his poop for a week or more. Make sure to give him a reason to go poop in the potty, like telling him that you will buy him something that he has been wanting. I know that it is bribery but sometimes it works! Good luck!!

My Ped. told me they would let me know they were ready. I did not force it with either of my two and one day I found them on the potty and it was a breeze from there. My son took a little longer to poop on potty but not much longer. Maybe a month or two. Good luck.

Hi J.,

This was me when we were trying to train my first son. He would pee but for three months we fought about pooping in the toilet. My husband came home one night and I told him that I had given up! He took my son's bear, which is his most prized possession and put it up on a high shelf. He told him, when you go poop on the potty, you can have Bear back. I think it scared me more than my son. To my amazement, he pooped on the potty that night and has ever since. My hubby brags that he trained our son in one day.
