We also used the potty seat. Cleaning out a chair was a litle gross for me. We bought both the seat and step stool so my son could get on the seat by himself.
My son is showing that he is ready to start potty training and I have been looking at the potty chairs and potty seats. What has your experience been with either of these? Does one tend to work better than the other?

My daughter uses the potty seat. She loves getting on the "big girl toilet." We started out on a chair that played music but she just thought it was a toy and wouldn't do her "business" on it. I would definetly get the seat. Good luck

I wish I had just started with the Peter Potty (a stand up urinal that actually flushes). My son didn't like the potty chair, the toilet, or the padded toilet seat, but he took to the Peter Potty instantly! You can find them online at several different sites including www.visionaireproducts.com, www.pottytrainingconcepts.com, and where to find them locally at www.peterpotty.com
My daughter started with the potty chair because someone had given them to us, but I wasn't thrilled with having to clean it, so we just switched to a potty seat. She likes that one because she feels all grown up like mommy and gets to sit on the big potty. I had to get a bigger step stool because she is tiny and couldn't reach to get up with a normal one, but once we got that figured out, I think it's a much better way to go. Honestly, from a learning perspective, it probably doesn't matter, but the seat takes up less space than the chair and doesn't require cleanup.
We tried all 3. A nice priced potty chair in my bathroom. My son is alittle taller than average and he just ended up with pee on the floor. He went mostly for the potty seats. There's the one that you just place on top - but he knew it's not that secure. Then there's this $10 plastic seat that you can get at Right Start it's so easy to attach and flips up for adults and down for the child. I attached it myself. That's the one he went for most...but long story short...Once my son saw another little boy standing - he started standing and that wasn't very long after we started training. He doesn't want to have anything to do with any potty seat or chair..so don't spend a lot of $.
For us, the potty chair was just too gross. We threw it out and just used the padded character seat from Walmart. We also bought a fold up travel seat that has handles for when we are out. I just kept it in a big Ziploc with those travel sanitizer wipes to clean it before putting it back. It made potty trips so much easier when we were out. Side note: carry sticky notes (or put a little water on a square piece of toilet paper) and stick it to the sensor on the auto-flush toilets. Otherwise, it will flush with them sitting on it and really freak them out. Also, I've seen ads for a potty seat that attaches to your toilet and flips up for adult use. With our 2nd and 3rd children, I'm going to try it.
We got a plain potty chair (I think it is a Graco one) with a seat that can transition to the potty. I was going to get the FP one with the bells & whistles, but then decided I really didn't want to clean a potty chair for very long. Having the potty chair with removable seat gave us the option to do whatever was most comfortable for our daughter. She liked to sit on the potty chair in our bathroom and "pretend" when she was just starting out. I think being up high might have scared her. Eventually (actually fairly quickly) we moved the seat to the regular toilet and she still uses it. We use the potty chair portion as a stool so she can climb up on the toilet.
Good luck!
My oldest liked the potty chair to start with because it played music and made flushing sounds. It kept her on the potty long enough to figure out what she was supposed to do, then we switched to the potty seat because I couldn't stand cleaning out the chair. My youngest didn't have the option. . . we put her on the potty seat and handed her a book to read.
I also used the potty seat. It was alot cleaner for me and my son never liked the potty seat. Plus it takes up less room and you don't have to worry about company stepping over the potty seat or seeing more than they wanted to!! I let my son pick out which character he wanted to have and he loved it.
