I inherited an Emeril Lagasse cookset that I love. It is nonstick. The problem is I ruined the outer surface of it because I put it in the dishwasher. I want to get a new set, but I want a set that I can put in the dishwasher and will last a long time. Any suggestions?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the recommendations. I've always had stainless steel which are dishwasher safe, so I learned my lesson with these!

I have rarely ever put my pans in the dishwsher, when I do, I do not use heat drying. It is the heat dry that messes them up.

I've seen a Calphalon ad featuring Food Network's Iron Chef Michael Symon that claims their NonStick IS dishwasher safe.

I am highly suspicious. Maybe you could buy some and let us know how it goes, tehehe.

I have a few high end peices with a nonstick surface. I would never put them in the dishwasher.

Stainless and non-stick are both okay in the dishwasher. The only type of non-stick you really shouldn't put it (and I assume this is the set you had) is the non-stick that's not anodized on the outside (as you discovered).

All the packages of cookwear tell you if it's dishwasher safe or not. Stick with their recommendations.

And, of course, cast iron is not safe in the dishwasher.

I think you can get the Emeril Lagasse sets at Sam's pretty cheap. Consumer Reports rated his sets pretty highly. They also rated the Tramontina sets really highly and you can get those at Walmart.

Hi M.---I think that most pots and pans would be ruined by the harsh soaps in the dishwasher. I wouldn't recommend it. Cookware is a pretty big ticket item if you are going to get even a decent set that will last you for a long time. The better the pots and pans, the more expensive they are. I would just bite the bullet and wash them by hand.

BTW...if you are looking to replace, consider looking at old fashioned cast iron. They are wonderful to cook it. The Lodge brand series now has a non-stick surface and cooking with cast iron is the best source of dietary iron so they are healthy to cook in too! Cast iron heats very evenly. I really love mine.

So, sorry I didn't answer your question directly, but bottom line you have to weigh the pros and cons to find what's best for you. Good luck! D.

In my world, I don't much care what the outside of my pans look like. Pots and pans are very expensive. I found that most pots and pans, although dishwasher safe, look nicer longer if never put in the dishwasher. I have a set of Revereware that is over 20 years old. I use lemon dishwashing soap and that helps keep the copper bottoms from having to be scrubbed as often...
I don't put it in the dishwasher - even though I could...
YMMV

The stainless steel product line as well as the lids are dishwasher-safe.
The hard-enamel collection is dishwasher-safe.
The hard-anodized collection and nonstick fry pans are not dishwasher-safe.

I have never put my pots and pans in the dishwasher. I just wash them immediately after using them and have no issue. If I have had a problem, my husband is great at getting the hard stuff off.

hubby got me the Emeril Stainless set last year and I LOVE it!! Can you just bypass the dishwaser? Most good pots and pans can't go in there anyways...

I don't know about the dishwasher... but if you want the best non-stick pan on the planet, get CIRCULON. I had Calphalon and thought it was great, but Ciruclon is THE BEST! You won't even care about putting it in the dishwasher because the food will come off simply by running it under the faucet and a very light brushing.
