Postpartum Swollen Vagina

My son will be seven weeks old in a few days, and I'm still experiencing a swollen vagina after a successful VBAC delivery. The swelling is toward the front, and it's internal swelling that is protruding out of my vaginal opening. I had it checked by my doctor three weeks ago and have another appointment next week. He said swelling is normal, but I thought I'd get input from you all. This was my second birth, but the first was a C-section, so I have no comparison.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the feedback thus far, moms. It does seem to be some sort of pelvic organ prolapse according to the reading I've done. I'll report back after my doc visit, and I'm going in prepared to ask for a second opinion!

I moved my appointment up. My vaginal wall under my bladder is stretched out, and sometimes throughout the day, it does protrude from inside my vagina. However, Kegles are making it better, and my dr said that it will tighten up on time with regular Kegles. I've noticed a difference already with doing the exercise several times a day. Doc said it isn't a prolapse, and certainly none of my pelvic organs are prolapsed. Thanks again for the input!

Do you mean prolapsed uterus?
At 7 weeks your uterus should have shrunk back to normal as much as it's going to
Try kegels.
Lots and lots of kegels.
They will help to tone up your pelvic floor muscles and help keep your uterus and bladder in place.

M. M,

Welcome to mamapedia!!

Congratulations on the birth of your son!!

it sounds like you have Pelvic Organ Prolapse or Rectocele. It happens but it is NOT "fine" or "normal" - normal would mean that every woman experiences it after childbirth. NOT every woman does.

This can be fixed. I would seek a second opinion.

Please seek a second opinion! Good luck!

I've never heard of this - it didn't happen with either of my births. I think that if your doctor passes this off as "normal", that I'd go get a second opinion. At the very least, I'd want to know what I could do to help - medicine, sitz baths, something.

I would not have sex of any kind right now until you have this swelling down...

Nope not normal at this point. Look for options on treatment at your next appointment and if you aren't getting any then it's time to seek out a second opinion.

This does not sound normal to me at all. Any swelling I had, was gone within a week of delivery all three times.

I agree with the others in that you should seek a second opinion if this doctor still suggests this is normal.

Agreed with the others. My swelling was pretty much gone after a week or two.

I have had 3 vaginal births and the swelling is gone pretty fast. I don't really remember but I can't remember dealing with swelling for so long. Certainly nothing protruding even after birth. I really would get a second opinion if your doctor doesn't help next week.
