Post Vacc. Soreness Is This Abnormal?

My 15 month old, had his shots on Wed. They had run out of 2 on his 12 month checkup. So I had made an appointment to get caught up. When I was there, they said he needed 2 more. I discussed it with his ped, and she said it was ok to get it done all at once, it would be better than continuing to bring him in. I am usually not for getting that many pokes in one day, but I was busy for the next few weeks, a vacation coming up... blah blah

So my baby got 4 pokes in his legs. 2 in each. He cried some, but was a real trooper. He seemed pretty good all day after, and night. Then morning came, he refused to walk. He could but screamed and screamed. I know they are sore, crabby, sleepy and feverish after shots (2 older girls that went through it) though I have never had them refuse to walk. He seemed stiff. I called the nurse and they said to try to make him walk a few times, and I did, but I felt like the devil.

Has any of your children refused to walk the whole day?
BTW, he is fine today, running playing and jumping. Still a little stiff and sore.

What can I do next?

Wow that sounds miserable. Don't cry :) I am breathng a sigh of relief that he's better today. I am a little taken a back that they would give him all those shots in arms and legs. My ped never does that. Normally just both arms. If they went a little too deep with the shots it probably aggravated/bruised his muscles thus the stiffness. Even if he isn't running a fever I'd give him some tylenol just for any soreness. Sounds like he'll be 100% tomorrow. BTW in the future don't let them put the shots in his legs :) Staggar the vaccines if you have to. Have a great weekend (Hugs)

I agree with the person formerly named JessicaWessica. (I don't know how to pronounce or spell her new name.)

With shots, some people aren't very good at giving them (or a squirmy toddler could make it difficult). If you move the needle even a teeny bit while it's in the skin, you can cause a bruise that hurts for a couple of days.

(My hubby had to give me shots given in my butt for fertility treatments, and he was pretty bad in the beginning. Once we figured out the don't move the needle issue, though, the shots hurt much less.)

Soreness is typical. I would have given him Tylenol right away and continued to give it to him for 24 hours and then eased off, checking to see if he seemed fussy enough to need continued dosing. Soreness can continue while decreasing over 3 days.

However it really depends on the person doing the vaccination. For instance, my own doctor SUCKS donkey balls at giving shots. She bruised my up horribly when I had my boosters and flu shot a month or two ago and the bruises lasted 2 weeks. I was pissed. But my daughters have an amazing pediatrician who I wish would do my shots. He never bruises the girls and they're never sore after he does them. They never swell, they don't even bleed a tiny dot. The girls are always surprised that they don't hurt. I'm always jealous. :-) The guy has the magic touch.

My 15mo just got his shots too. He shot his leg out just as they injected one of the needles. The needle left a big scratch. Afterwords it was red and very sore, but the soreness went away after a couple of days.

No, but I always gave mine tylenol for the first 24 hours as my Ped always suggested. So maybe that helped?

My oldest was notorious for running fevers with hers though.
