I recently started going through PPD and am wondering about how long it lasts.I was put on anxiety and depression medicine and was seeing a therapist. Is their anyone else out there who has gone through it and can tell me how long theres lasted.I'm told I have to be on the medication for one year and hate having to take anything.I have never had anything like this before and always was a calm, happy person.Help me understand that i'm not goin crazy!!!

What can I do next?

Jewish Family and Children's Services has a support groups for moms with PPD and related issues. They are called "This isn't What I expected." They are located in Waltham and the website is JFCSboston.org. Anyone of any faith is welcome. It might be a good way to connect with some other moms who are having similar issues. There are many. Don't feel that you are alone.

I think how long it lasts depends on the person and the situation. You are definitely not going crazy -- this happens to many women, even ones who have never faced depression before in their life. You are still your calm, happy, competent self, but with a new challenge to face, and it may take some time to figure out how to best cope.

I have heard that "A Deeper Shade of Blue" by Dr. Ruta Nonacs is an excellent book on depression associated with child-bearing years.

Good luck!

Look into Evening Primrose Oil - It will re-balance your hormones and help you get back on track.

Hey D.,
Like you I have ppd. My son is 15 months old. Unlike you I have been battling depression, panic attacks and anxiety pretty much my whole life. It is a aweful thing to go through but luckily you had the right state of mind to get help when you realized you needed it. Alot of women do not even realize that that is what they are going through and just brush off the "bad feelings" and sometimes it gets worse. I do not think there is a time frame for ppd. It is usually something that with medicine works itself out. Your hormones need to balance out and when they return to normal you mental health should be on its way back to normal too.
I wish you the best of luck.Congrats on your babies.
