Post-surgery Gift?

Hi Moms - I could use some advice...the mother of one of my son's good friends had major surgery this morning (a liver transplant). She will be in the hospital for at least a couple of weeks. I would like to send something to the family, or do something nice for them, but not sure what to do. I have never actually met the parents - the boys are sophomores in high school and live a distance away from each other. Since I do not personally know the family, what might be appropriate? My son is so concerned and worried for his friend - I would like to make a gesture on his behalf. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for your help!

What can I do next?

A basket of snacks to eat while they are inthe waiting room along with a roll of quarters to use at the vending machines. Parking passes for the hospital garage. Jigsaw puzzles or board games. Movie passes. Gas cards. And for the Mom, a basket of nice toiletries since the stuff they give you to use at the hospital can be so awful.

I think anything that makes home life or basics easier is always good. There might be some restaurants that offer take-out or delivery meals that would be nice for a gift certificate. If the hospital charges for parking you could see if you can buy a gift parking pass for the family for visiting since that can add up. That is what we try to do for co-workers' families when something happens.

arrange meal delivery for a week for the family--then offer to have the children overnight or something like that so the dad can get a break too!

I say make a meal and drop it by or have your son drop it by. It will help the household since the mom is out of commission. A get well card would be nice in addition.

Gift cards for delivery food or something they heat and eat, maybe your son could get his friend a little something. Dont send flowers or plants.

I would suggest a gift card for a restaurant or deli that delivers takeout food. That will be very useful and appreciated when she gets home from the hospital.

Think gift cards to restaurants that deliver or have curbside service are always a great idea!

Depending on your budget, paying for a cleaning lady once a week or every two weeks for a while would be great, or gas gift cards or grocery store gift card - people tend to eat out more and have to do more driving to the hospital - it gets expensive. Have your son contribute some of his money - let him be generous.

How about some books to read. Since they're friends he might know what genre books he likes to read.

Why not go together and visit him at the hospital. How far away is it?

Your son is a very caring individual. I wish their were more out there like him.

Having to constantly go back and forth to the hospital, I'm sure they're not getting a chance to eat decents meals. If possible make them a meal or two. If not a gift card to a local restaurant that has take out. Even a fruit basket would be a nice gesture.

that is so sweet of you. I suggest making some dinners for them...I'm sure they'd appreciate not having to worry about cooking for a couple of nights. Or since she's going to be sore after surgery, offering to help her around the house or help with running errands, I'm sure she'd appreciate.
