Post-partum Hair Loss - Hoffman Estates,IL

Okay, I feel silly posting this, but I'm worried about all this hair that I'm losing! Seriously, chunks of it come out when I wash my hair. And I'm constantly shedding - it's just getting annoying. My sweet husband even researched this for me and said that I should be losing around 500 hairs a day. But I feel like I'm losing way more than that, and that I'm going to be bald in no time (I know that's not true, but I feel like it!). I used to have really nice thick hair, but now, it's thinned out so much! My baby is now 4 months old, and I never did have such substantial hair loss with my firstborn.

Is there anything I can do to slow down this process? Or does it just take time? Someone tell me I'm not crazy!

Sorry for this shallow question.

I too lost a lot more hair the 2nd time around. My daughter is now 12 months, and my hair is now starting to grow back (the baby hairs are about 2-3 inches long...). I'm also still breast-feeding, and with my son I only nursed for about 8.5 months. It's all hormonal, so I think it just varies each time. But I lost ridiculous amounts of hair for a while! Also, unfortunately, my hair is growing back a lot more gray than it was before. LOL

Hi L.:

Around 3-4 months after giving birth to my son I started to lose large amounts of hair. I wrote it off to normal hair loss, but I actually had hypothyroidism. This was my first and (pretty much) only symptom. If I had to do it all over again, I would have run to the doctor right then to drop off a sample of blood. It is a really easy blood test (tsh, t3 and t4) and if you explain your symptoms to pcp they can probably even write up the paper work and you wouldn't even have to see them. It is very common for women to become hypothyroid after giving birth and trust me it is easier to treat if you catch it in the early stages. Hopefully, you do not have hypothyroidism, but the blood test takes a few minutes and it will rest your mind.

All the best to you and your little ones.

I also have a 4 mo old and my hair just started to fall out. I have had substantial hair loss with my first child and the hair all eventually grows back. You won't go bald....just feels like it. Pretty freaky to see all that hair coming out but normal. Congrats on your baby!

I, too, had this happen to me. It is something about 4 months post partum mark. I don't recall exactly how long it lasted....maybe 2 months. My doctor told me that if it lasted beyond 6 months pp that she would begin a battery of testing to check hormone levels etc. Luckily it didn't last that long. When I inquired with my hair stylist, she guessed that my child was 4 months old. I was very relunctant to make food for parties/company because my hair was everywhere!!

Just to be safe ask your doctor and/or your hair stylist. I'd bet that it's just your hormones rebalancing after pregnancy.

I thought it would never stop falling out.It does. You don't really lose hair when you are pregnant so you lose enough hair for the whole pregnancy. Don't worry :)

Hi L.:
Welcome to another part of motherhood! Yes, you are NORMAL! Many of us have gone through this and it does feel like you will have no hair at all. But you have to remember that your body held onto those hairs for 9 months (less fell out than normal during this timeframe) and now the body has to "let go" of all the ones that were supposed to fall out. So, it will feel "bald" for about 6 or more months, depending on the length of your hair. I decided to cut my hair shorter as my longer hair was looking so thin. I haven't gone back to long hair since.

What I do know is that if you use cheap shampoos and conditioners, this will add to your problem. I use some products that are all botanically based and one has thermal fusion (heat activated) to help stimulate the hair folicle and get it to start growing. Continue taking your supplements. That's a must! I'd love to share what has worked for me if you would like more information. Don't worry, your hair will come back but as you know, it takes time! Just use good products and take your vitamins!
